A Weekly Newsletter from Pine Street Church
A Word from Andrew... WATCH Today's YouTube Video Worship, WATCH US GROW Preschool Campaign, and All the News That's Fit to Print...
Dear Pine Street Church Members and Friends,

Welcome to the Second Sunday of Lent. Today, we focus on St. Mark's version of the Transfiguration story.

Preacher and professor Barbara Brown Taylor’s wisdom in her book called “An Altar in the World” puts it this way:

“Most of us spend so much time thinking about where we have been or where we are supposed to be going that we have a hard time recognizing where we actually are. When someone asks us where we want to be in our lives, the last thing that occurs to us is to look down at our feet and say, 'Here, I guess, since this is where I am.'”

We are all called to be present to our experience and to pay attention to the holy happening in our lives every day and every moment. Watch today's worship video to find out more about what this means!

Our Off Broadway Preschool has a WATCH US GROW campaign that we will launch this coming week. We have been graced with a grant, and we'll need you to be part of it! Stay tuned for more information about how you can help our littlest souls and to give to their growth! More details to come this week!

Art of the Soul - Jena-Michel Basquiat and Kara Walker

Probably all of us have experienced some form of trauma early in life. It usually leads to faulty emotional programs in adulthood - maybe even behavioral or substance addictions. But if we think about it, it makes perfect sense for a young child, a teenager, an adult to find any means possible to self-soothe such pain.

In the month of February, we have looked at the collective trauma inflicted on the African diaspora in America through the institution of slavery and racism. Our previous artists, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Jacob Lawrence, and Faith Ringgold, had their own unique artistic responses to that particular trauma. During this presentation, we will look at the responses of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kara Walker.

As we conclude our journey with such great artists, I hope their art will teach us ways to accept both our own trauma, and the trauma we have inflicted on others.

See you Sunday! And please share this event with kindred spirits.

You can learn more about each week's teachings at the WAMA Art Asylum page HERE.
