A Word from Andrew... My "Mason Jar Advent" Update...

Happy Advent, Pine Street Church Members and Friends!

I hope that you are enjoying the "Mason Jar Advent" series so far!

Thanks to our friendship and partnership with the Salt Project, our preparations for Christmas are being enriched and enlivened.

With a spin on the traditional Advent calendar, we are using simple Ball brand Mason jars filled with gift tags, each with a prayer, activity, conversation starter, or social media prompt.

How is it going so far for you?

I've heard from one family so far about how this Advent spiritual practice is inspiring family dinner conversations.

In our family, two particular Advent gift tags stood out this week:

1)   Addison drew the tag that read, "Try making today 'no plastic day' and reflect with a friend about the experience."

Well, we immediately recognized that we had already eaten Challah bread from a plastic container that day and watermelon we had stored in a Ziploc. Advent fail!

But it did give us the chance to talk about how plastic waste is a harm to our environment. We learned and talked about how plastic tra
sh is in our oceans and found in the guts of more than 90% of the world's sea birds! What?!

We decided that our action would be to focus on reusable containers like glass (like Mason jars!) to store our food to help cut down on our plastic waste (which is a fairly big deal to those of us who know what it's like to pack our kid's school lunches every day!).

2)   Aidan drew a tag that read, "Give something away. Your heart will feel lighter, and the world will be better for it." (He's still pondering what he might give away. Maybe some of his plastic Legos?!).

We did decide that we will give away coats that we have either outgrown or no longer wear. Simple, yes. But to be able to walk through Advent with these kinds of intentional conversations as a family is a gift of time and focus we otherwise would not have taken.

I would love to hear from you about what kinds of conversations you're having in your own families and what actions you are taking as you use this Mason Jar Advent" resource.

Meantime, be sure to check out our Mason Jar Advent video below, if you haven't yet seen it.

And if you are on social media, please share it with your friends!

This is a wonderful season to invite people to join us at Pine Street Church. Who is someone that you can invite or bring to church with you during this Advent season?

Expectantly,
Andrew
