The title of Sunday's sermon is "Shedding." When God told Moses, “Take off your shoes,” the Hebrew root for that word is to shed. Like a snake sheds its skin. Like a bird’s feathers molt. The old is peeled away so something new can begin.
For years I’ve overtly or covertly preached a Threshold Theology: how we think about God during those liminal times in life where the past and the future meet beneath our feet. We think of responsibilities, possibilities, and wring our hands over probabilities.
The Apostle Paul wrote about this. The Roman Christians were to shed isolationist behaviors; then they were to stand upon the values of love, hospitality to strangers, and harmony with one another.
Turns out, ole Moses needed something more than a good pair of sandals to endure the adventure that awaited him. He would need to be grounded (holy grounded!) in God.
So do we.

A called Church-in-Conference will be held Sunday, September 13, immediately following the in-person Church-on-the-Lawn worship service. The purpose of the meeting is to consider and vote on proposed amendments to NDBC’s bylaws as recommended by an ad hoc committee appointed to periodically review the bylaws. The committee includes Dave Wooten, chair, and members Hartwell Dew, Jackie Hardin, Don Janney, and Carolyn Mahaffey.
The Church Council approved the committee's proposed bylaw changes on March 1 of this year. The motion before the church is for approval of the recommended revisions.
Please plan to attend the Church-in-Conference to discuss and vote on
these amendments. If you have questions prior to the meeting, please contact Dave Wooten at dgw0421@comcast.net.

As the COVID crisis continues to impact families and organizations helping those children and families across the metro area and our state, NDBC families are finding ways to help. The missions committee has provided updates about ways to volunteer with some of our Northside Drive mission partners and others in the communities we serve. In response to the updates, some members have shared ways they are providing support to the organizations. For example:
Syd and Don Janney want church members to know that Wade Davis estate china, glassware, small appliances and other household elements are being donated to the Buckhead Christian Ministry THRIFTique in support of their mission. They are contemplating donating some larger pieces such as furniture, since THRIFTique now has a pickup vehicle, which makes those donations easier. Thriftique needs volunteers to help sort donated items and work in the store. BCM also has virtual roles that include helping review and confirm financial assistance appointments and providing support with resume writing. Information is available here.
Dave Wooten shared this approach for helping: He and Cathy are canceling their gym membership during the COVID period and will divide that money between Urban Recipe and Buckhead Christian Ministry (or Habitat mortgage relief) each month for the foreseeable future. Food and shelter insecurity are becoming more desperate issues every day, and they find this an easy way to "do" local missions. Other members are donating their canceled gym membership fees to organizations providing childcare for children of first responders and essential workers.
J.B. Gilbert shared a powerful video about the Crime Victims Advocacy Council, which the Missions Committee supports and where J.B. serves as president of the board.
Andrew P. Stewart Center Special Request
As mentioned in the last Update, The Stewart Center is asking for earbuds and headphones for their students to help them concentrate while they are online with their classes or doing homework. If you would like to help with headphones or other items, please use this link to the Stewart Center's Amazon Wish List. Once you add to their cart from the wish list and check out, select the option to ship to Ashley Hick's Gift Registry.
Our Northside Drive Mask Makers are making and providing masks for the children in the Clarkston Cluster schools and for those who attend classes and tutoring programs at the Andrew P. Stewart Center. Volunteers are helping in many ways to get masks made and delivered to those who need them in hospitals, senior centers, schools and other facilities.
