Northside Drivers: Contribute . . . your words!
Our church's 23 years with James Lamkin, senior pastor
and raconteur extraordinaire, has produced lots of stories, personal anecdotes, and serious memories. We are asking that you share yourswhether favorite one-liners, paragraph reminiscences, or that “time you will always remember“—to incorporate into the Northside Drive Home Companion (NDHC) events.
Please send your contributions by Sunday, October 4, in time for our first NDHC on October 11 to Syd Janney at [email protected], by mail to 705 E Morningside Dr. Atlanta 30324, or by text message phone call to 404-702-3992.
Our now-retiring Senior Pastor James Lamkin has long been a fan of A Prairie Home Companion, the live radio show on air from 1974 to 2016 known for its folk and traditional musicians, tongue-in-cheek radio drama, and relaxed humor all masterminded by the wry storytelling style of Garrison Keillor. James' passions for storytelling, music, and memories make our Northside Drive Home Companion a similarly winsome format to honor James Lamkin and have fun together remembering the 23 years he has ministered among us as Senior Pastor.
Below are the Sundays, each created around a seasonal theme, when our church will gather (as Covid protocols instruct and weather permits) for these times of remembering and celebrating together. More details will follow as plans are confirmed.

October 11 Stories and Songs from a Long Pastorate
5:00 pm Church Grounds

November 15 Precious Memories. . . with Quilts as Backdrop
3:00 pm Church Grounds

December 6 Home for the Holidays
3:00 pm Church Grounds

For each event, church member/singer/musician Kurt Thomas will be the Musical Choreographer with James Lamkin as Chief Storyteller and Honoree. Other church members will also contribute.

Save these dates and times for the Northside Drive Home Companion series.
The Art & Soul church school class has begun its fall study of the lectionary scriptures. All are invited to join each Sunday morning at 9:30 via Zoom. The study source is the Thoughtful Christian's series Feasting on the Word, and you can prepare by reading through the lectionary selections (see the link below) and/or reading the short Feasting on the Word preparatory sheet. Dan Oakley will lead the Sunday September 27th discussion.

At 9:30 a.m. on October 3rd, we will hold a Saturday session of Art & Soul, as the following day there will be Sunday worship on the lawn at 10 a.m. If you would like to receive weekly reminders about the Art & Soul class, please email David Beavers.
Volunteer Opportunity at Buckhead Christian Ministry
BCM has new shifts available at THRIFTique. These volunteer shifts will be in-person opportunities to help support the needs of THRIFTique at this time. Click HERE to view and sign-up for available shifts on VolunteerHub. If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

"Thank you everyone for your time and donations. This is why I love being a part of NDBC."  Melissa Lester is giving out roses for our church members' support of the Compassionate Atlanta mask drive she recently shared with Northside Drive. Approximately 100 masks have been collected, which is great. She is still taking donations of masks if you will let her know.
Several months ago a group of Northside Drivers decided to do more reading to help themselves better understand and respond in a Christian way to current issues around race and social justice. All are welcome to join whenever and as often as you wish.
Meetings take place via Zoom, and the next will be Thursday, October 8, at 7 p.m. Associate Pastor Daniel Headrick will lead a discussion of The Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church's Complicity in Racism by Jemar Tisby. The Zoom link will be available in next week's Pinnacle. The book is available on Amazon and Kindle, and short video segments can be watched on Amazon Prime video here.
Join the Alliance of Baptists on Saturday, October 10, at 12 pm for Devoted to Justice, a 90-minute online gathering to consider issues of justice and liberation. The keynote speaker is Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. Registration is required.
NDBC is a long-time supporter of the Regional Council of Churches of Atlanta (RCC), which brings together churches, faith-based and secular non-profit organizations and others who wish to promote the common good and magnify the work and witness of the church, especially in Atlanta. The weekly RCC e-newsletter is an excellent way to keep up with important events going on in the life of Atlanta's faith community. If interested, go to the RCC's website or directly to their sign-up form. You can also keep up with RCC on their Facebook page.
Mind over Matter
How we think…and what we think…affects our spirituality. It impacts our relationship to God and to each other. It changes how we do church. What we do with our mind is a holy thing.

The Apostle Paul seemed to have all this in mind when he challenged the church at Philippi to have the mind of Christ. He then sings a song about what that looked like regarding the humble, self-emptying journey of Jesus. His life as a servant. His death on a cross. Reward and recognition and joy eventually come, but the pathway there is through the humility of loving service.

Paul imagines the difference it would make for a church, if the church all sang off the same page of the hymnbook. Though diverse voices, our unifying mission and vision would be following Jesus in the downwardly mobile way of the crucified Nazarene. To do so is to have the mind of Christ. And to have the mind of Christ, matters.
