MARKINGS
If you've ever watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace or at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier then you remember it is done with order and dignity. The United Methodist Church has certain procedures for pastors and churches when there is a change of appointments. We are working carefully on many of them to ensure a smooth transition. The Staff Parish Relations Committee, chaired by Beverly Power, and the Board of Trustees, chaired by Darren Davis, are making plans for a smooth and orderly transition, including farewells and hellos.
United Methodist clergy have a covenant with each other which includes, among other things, a trust and a responsibility to support and complement one another. One such way of doing that is following the policy on ministerial courtesy. It outlines the denomination's expectations with regard to professional relationships after an appointment change. Our Standing Rules of the Annual Conference and the Book of Discipline, states:
All pastoral functions, for example preaching, baptisms, weddings and funerals, are the responsibility and privilege of the pastor under appointment to the specific charge, circuit, or parish. Retired ministries, former ministers, located ministers, ministers, under special appointments, or neighboring ministers shall perform such functions only upon the invitation of the pastor in charge.
When a pastor retires or leaves an appointment, he shall not participate in the life of the congregation for at least one year.
When it comes to my role as the Chaplain at the Community Hospital (CHOMP) I will also honor this professional courtesy. If (and hopefully not) you are admitted to CHOMP, Pam will be the pastor to provide spiritual care.
Your new pastor Pamela Cummings and I have already discussed our unique relationship and how we will be supportive of one another especially given that I will still be living here. I intend to do whatever I can to support Pam's ministry in this parish. We will be having a conversation in early June insuring a healthy transition and continued ministry of this church.
Meanwhile, FUMC is moving forward. Our working committees and fellowship groups are continuing to meet and make plans for future ministry and mission. In many ways we are not in a holding pattern.
The Music Ministry is planning an afternoon concert
on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00pm.
Summer Vacation Bible School, Part 2 of "Children in the Bible"
is scheduled for Monday, June 13 - Friday, June 17 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
Jane Cross and the Outreach Ministry Team are gearing up to support the children in Swailand and going on a Volunteer in Mission trip in August.
The Strategic Planning Committee is looking forward to working with Pastor Pam.
For several years the suggestion has been made that we have a Women's Sunday in the same way that we have a Men's Sunday. So, this Sunday women from our church will lead the worship service. Joyce Blevins, a certified Lay Speaker, will give the morning message to celebrate the many ways that women of FUMC live out their Faith in God's Love through Jesus Christ.
In grace, in hope, in possibility,
Pastor Mark
