MARKINGS

If you've ever watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace or at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier then you remember it is done with order and dignity.  The United Methodist Church has certain procedures for pastors and churches when there is a change of appointments.  We are working carefully on many of them to ensure a smooth transition.  The Staff Parish Relations Committee, chaired by Beverly Power, and the Board of Trustees, chaired by Darren Davis, are making plans for a smooth and orderly transition, including farewells and hellos.

United Methodist clergy have a covenant with each other which includes, among other things, a trust and a responsibility to support and complement one another.  One such way of doing that is following the policy on ministerial courtesy.  It outlines the denomination's expectations with regard to professional relationships after an appointment change.  Our Standing Rules of the Annual Conference and the Book of Discipline, states:

All pastoral functions, for example preaching, baptisms, weddings and funerals, are the responsibility and privilege of the pastor under appointment to the specific charge, circuit, or parish.  Retired ministries, former ministers, located ministers, ministers, under special appointments, or neighboring ministers shall perform such functions only upon the invitation of the pastor in charge.

When a pastor retires or leaves an appointment, he shall not participate in the life of the congregation for at least one year.

When it comes to my role as the Chaplain at the Community Hospital (CHOMP) I will also honor this professional courtesy.  If (and hopefully not) you are admitted to CHOMP, Pam will be the pastor to provide spiritual care.

Your new pastor Pamela Cummings and I have already discussed our unique relationship and how we will be supportive of one another especially given that I will still be living here.  I intend to do whatever I can to support Pam's ministry in this parish.  We will be having a conversation in early June insuring a healthy transition and continued ministry of this church.

Meanwhile, FUMC is moving forward.  Our working committees and fellowship groups are continuing to meet and make plans for future ministry and mission.  In many ways we are not in a holding pattern.

The Music Ministry is planning an afternoon concert

on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00pm.

Summer Vacation Bible School, Part 2 of "Children in the Bible"

is scheduled for Monday, June 13 - Friday, June 17 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Jane Cross and the Outreach Ministry Team are gearing up to support the children in Swailand and going on a Volunteer in Mission trip in August.

The Strategic Planning Committee is looking forward to working with Pastor Pam.

For several years the suggestion has been made that we have a Women's Sunday in the same way that we have a Men's Sunday.  So, this Sunday women from our church will lead the worship service.  Joyce Blevins, a certified Lay Speaker, will give the morning message to celebrate the many ways that women of FUMC live out their Faith in God's Love through Jesus Christ.

In grace, in hope, in possibility,

Pastor Mark

Palo Corona ParkHiking News - This Saturday,

May 14 at Palo Corona Park
Our next hike will be at Palo Corona Park just south of Carmel on Saturday, May 14. We will hike to Inspiration Point and then on to Animas Pond (4 miles round trip, 850 feet elevation gain).
This area is by permit only so we will rendezvous at the old Black Bear Diner in the Crossroads Shopping Center off Route 1 in Carmel at 9:00am and then carpool to the park which is about a 5 minute drive.
Bring lunch/snack. Families and friends welcome. To sign up for the email list, contact Jane Cross at cross2@pacbell.net or by phone at 643-0541.

Your Board of Trustees invites you to join them in sprucing up the parsonage for our new pastor. We are excited that she wants to live there. We have a list of (mostly little) things that need to be done and we will be having a "fun" day at the parsonage THIS Saturday, May 14 from 9-noon. We need gardeners (no huge projects) and handypersons (no huge projects). All are welcome. The address is: 2841 Ransford - that's behind Wells Fargo Bank.

YOUTH NEWS!

I am so very proud of the youth group for the excellent service they ran on Mother's Day!  Thank you Ofa, Mele, Nick, Stevie, Taylor, Lela, Tommy and Lala.  Thanks also to Oliva and Oki for the wonderful dance and everyone who participated.

Thanks again to the praise band that played for the youth Sunday.  They call themselves Steady Mile.  They are already booked for First Night and next year's Good Old Days!

The next youth fundraiser will be on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day).  Be looking for a flyer which when used at the California Pizza Kitchen at the Del Monte Shopping Center will earn us 20% on the amount of the bill.  This is an easy and fun way to help us out.

Donna Brandt, Director of Youth Ministries

Praise for the Youth!!!

What a heartfelt service for Mothers and All this past Sunday!  The music, the messages, the commitment were such a blessing!  Thank you to Donna and all who work so hard with the children and youth of our congregation.  Well done!  We are proud of you!

Mission to Swaziland: Please Care and Share
"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." Hebrews 13:16

The love and generous donations from our church given for the 2009 Volunteers in Mission (VIM) trip to Swaziland brought hope to many who have little and helped many important ministries at work there. In preparation for this year's trip in August, the VIM team asked Chris McLain (the VIM volunteer in Swaziland) how we can help the children at the new rural Lomngeletjane Methodist school we helped fund. The new school has 150 children in grades 1-4 with a new classroom block for grades 5-7 nearly complete.

Chris replied "Most of the children in this area are orphaned and/or vulnerable and are attending school for the first time. Many children don't have uniforms and, if they do, they are usually too small or have been torn and patched many, many times.  In addition, many children don't have sweaters or track suits to wear during the cold winter months or decent shoes and socks.

Swazi School Uniforms

Three students at Lomngeletjane school.

Their uniforms are well worn!

While uniforms are required by the government, luckily children are still allowed to come to school if they don't have one.  However, the lack of a uniform, especially a decent one, highlights their poverty and/or circumstances and leads to decreased self-esteem.  A child without a decent uniform is often more quiet and withdrawn."

The average cost of a school uniform is $65 which includes a shirt and dress/pants, track suit, shoes, underwear and socks. We are asking everyone to "care and share" for these children and make a donation toward a child's uniform by July 15 in support of our ongoing mission and ministry in Swaziland. Every donation will make a significant difference in a child's future. Please make your check payable to First United Methodist Church with a note "Swaziland Ministry" on the check or envelope. All donations are fully tax deductible.
