Water is a precious resource, and it is essential for all life.

At Prince William Water, we know you rely on our service every day— for drinking, cooking, showering, caring for your pets, gardening and other basic household needs. That’s why we are mission-driven and customer-first focused.

In this special edition of Pipeline, learn about Prince William Water’s mission to bring value to your water and your environment—by investing in infrastructure, protecting water quality through robust partnerships, and educating and engaging with our community.

Tap water provides value for your health, your wallet and our planet, especially when compared with bottled water.

Safety

Tap water is strictly regulated by the EPA under the Safe Drinking Water Act, with more rigorous testing and monitoring than bottled water. We routinely meet or exceed all Safe Drinking Water Act regulations.

Budget

Prince William Water customers pay less than a penny per gallon for tap water. Buying a 16.9-ounce bottle of water averages $1, or $7.57 per gallon.

Environment

Four out of five single-use water bottles end up in a landfill, where they can take 450 years to break down!

Options

You can filter your tap water if you have taste sensitivities or preferences.

Delivering nearly 12 billion gallons of drinking water and treating over 10 billion gallons of wastewater per year, managing $1.2 billion in infrastructure and meeting stringent regulations—all come with a cost.

Providing essential services at fair and affordable rates is a guiding principle for Prince William Water. The average bill is about one percent of the earnings of our community’s lowest-income residents and is considerably lower than other utilities.

One important way Prince William Water delivers reliable water and wastewater reclamation services is through continued infrastructure investment. Our complex network includes approximately 2,500 miles of water and sewer pipe, 22 elevated water tanks, over 80 pumping stations and booster stations, and more.

We conduct preventive maintenance, upgrade existing infrastructure and construct new facilities to serve our community.

We also manage a $1.4 billion capital program to maintain a high standard of service to the community and meet evolving regulations. Currently, we are undertaking the largest infrastructure project in our history to improve resiliency, enhance odor control and continue to meet or exceed regulatory requirements at our H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility in Woodbridge.

Whether it is source water, drinking water, wastewater, stormwater or groundwater, it’s all One Water—a single, interconnected system that serves us all.

A One Water approach means we focus on using every drop of water to its maximum potential. This holistic approach is necessary to meet the long-term water needs of our community and protect the environment. It also requires that we work collaboratively with industry and community partners.

Prince William Water takes pride in being environmental leaders, which includes a shared role with other organizations in protecting water quality:

  • We work with our wholesale providers, Fairfax Water and the City of Manassas, to continuously monitor and test our drinking water to ensure it meets or exceeds regulations;

  • We partner with Prince William County Government and Fairfax Water in the Occoquan Reservoir Task Force to focus on the continued sustainability of this important drinking water resource;

  • State entities like the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality have specific regulatory authority for the water and wastewater industry; and

  • Federal agencies like the EPA and Centers for Disease Control also provide regulatory oversight and guidance.
