Every spring, Prince William Water takes extra steps to keep your drinking water clean and ready for daily use. These steps follow industry best practices:

  1. Our teams flush water mains by briefly opening fire hydrants and allowing them to flow freely. This cleans residual sediment and minerals from pipes throughout our service area.

  2. Our wholesale drinking water providers temporarily change the primary disinfectant in their treatment process. The disinfectant conversion works hand-in-hand with hydrant flushing to clean the system more effectively.

What You Might Notice (March-May)

  • Prince William Water crews and trucks in your neighborhood, opening hydrants.

  • A slight chlorine taste or odor in your tap water due to the disinfectant change. Your sensitivity level and location can affect whether you notice the change. You may want to use a filter or fill a container with water and let it sit uncovered for a couple of hours.

  • Brief periods of tap water cloudiness. To reduce cloudiness, run the cold-water tap for about two minutes to clear it.

Prince William Water’s version of “spring cleaning” is preventive maintenance. This allows us to provide exceptional service to our customers by maintaining our infrastructure before it needs costly repairs or disrupts service. As the weather warms, preventive maintenance goes into high gear. Following are a few examples:

Easement Clearing:

Springtime work includes clearing brush and trees in many of our facility easements so we can easily access pump stations, pipes and other infrastructure during emergencies or when other work is needed.

Exercising Valves and Hydrants:

Proactive maintenance helps to ensure these vital assets work when needed. This maintenance:

  • Prevents valves and hydrants from seizing or breaking due to corrosion or mineral buildup

  • Extends equipment life

  • Ensures operational readiness and reduces water loss

  • Prevents costly repairs or unexpected shutdowns

Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining:

Through this trenchless rehabilitation program, crews insert a liner into sewer pipes to prevent corrosion and leaks. Read more in “Getting to Know.”

How long have you worked with Prince William Water?

I have been at Prince William Water for 21 years. My original position was as a Meter Reader.

What are your daily responsibilities as the Inflow & Infiltration Supervisor?

My daily duties include managing the Inflow & Infiltration teams to conduct activities like Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) sewer main inspections, Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining, manhole inspections, manhole rehabilitation and new sewer main inspections.

I also manage customer questions, relevant contractors, invoices and quotes for department projects. I have to wear many hats in my role!

What is CIPP lining?

CIPP is a trenchless technology that allows us to place a new pipe liner inside an existing sewer pipe instead of using traditional dig-and-replace methods. This improves safety and avoids higher replacement costs.

How do you decide where it is needed?

We use CCTV inspections to help decide where to conduct CIPP lining. While inspecting sewers with the camera, each defect is coded and given a score. Based on the total score, we determine which section will need to be lined first. The footage is also used to determine if there are any defects that will need to be repaired before lining or if the section needs to be replaced entirely.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

I love to travel with my wife, I play golf with my family and friends, and recently my son got me into watching Indy and F1 racing. We hope to see a race in Japan one day since we lived there back when I was in the Navy.

Are you looking to join an exceptional organization that offers a variety of career opportunities?

Consider Prince William Water, where we are committed to preserving and protecting our planet’s most valuable resource—water!

Flow is the hero behind the pipes, keeping every drop of water moving where it needs to go. In springtime, Flow and our Prince William Water crews do a lot of work to keep our pipes, hydrants, valves and valuable equipment working properly.

You and your family can also be superheroes who make sure water and wastewater keep flowing to and from your home. Don’t flush wipes of any kind and don’t pour Fats, Oils and Grease down the drain! Those are two bad habits that can clog pipes in your home and our system.
