The Invasive Warriors Fall Into Action!

PLEASE JOIN US For One or Both

Invasive Warriors Workdays:

Saturday, November 9th

Tuesday, November 12th

9:00-11:30

(weather permitting)

We will meet at the Country Club first and then head out to deal with invasive trees and vines. Any level of help would be appreciated!

Wear long sleeves, long pants, work gloves, and protective eye wear. Consider using an insect repellant for exposed skin. Bring hand pruners, loppers and an axe if you have one.

This Month's Invasive Species

Asiatic Bittersweet Vines

(photos 1 and 2) can grow very large, sometimes as large as a tree branch, covering the tree’s canopy. The berries are orange and yellow and can be spread by wildlife as they eat them, or by humans who use them in decoration!

Invasive Shrub: Multiflora Rose

Native to Asia and first introduced to the US in 1866, this flowering shrub (photo 3) is a multi-stemmed perennial shrub. The stems are green to red arching canes which have stiff, curved thorns (photo 4). It reproduces through its seeds and everywhere an arching cane touches the ground, a new plant forms. This results in impenetrable thickets that exclude all other important vegetation.

Did you know?

Many butterflies survive the winter as chrysalises attached to plant stems or hidden among fallen leaves at the base of their favorite host plant. Save these future butterflies and rake some of the leaves that are nearest the tree base back into the bed.

Calling All Volunteers!

Do you love our beautiful green spaces? Do you love the sound of birds singing, and the humming of bees and hummingbirds in the spring and summer?

Please consider finding time to help us fight invasive species to preserve the biodiversity of plants that support habitat, and the health and beauty of our natural areas! Please contact invasivewarrior@glenmore-community.org to see how you can help.
