The digital magazine for faculty, staff, students and friends of Pensacola State College

After she retires at the end of June, Susan Morgan has a few things to do. But no real plans.

She enjoys yard work, so she’ll be out trimming, cutting and planting a bit. She’ll do some traveling to see family and friends. She’ll do some reading.

But for the most part, she’s just not sure yet.

She remembers a discussion with former Pensacola State College President Charles Atwell years ago. Atwell was telling her about another former president’s many hobbies and pursuits. But Atwell admitted to Morgan he had few.

“He put everything into his job at the College,” Morgan said. “I think I did a lot of that too. I’m going to have to find something to do so I don’t get bored.”

Morgan has been the Pensacola State Humanities and Social Sciences department head since 2006, joining the College as a history instructor in 1989. Her last day of work is June 30.

“I will miss my colleagues very much,” said Morgan, who was inducted into the PSC Academy of Teaching Excellence in 1996. “I’ll miss the faculty and staff and the students and all the people I talk to every day. Everyone (in the department) is so close and supportive of each other.”

More than 400 Pensacola State College students will become Pensacola State College graduates on May 9 during an in-person commencement ceremony at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Another 400 or so PSC students will graduate during a virtual ceremony to be broadcast within days of the in-person ceremony.

Students were given in-person and virtual options for graduation because of the ongoing concern about COVID-19.

“We’re going to have a live ceremony, but we’re also having a virtual graduation ceremony for those who can’t or don’t wish to attend in person,” said PSC President Ed Meadows. “This allows everyone who wishes to have some commencement experience to do so.”

The in-person graduation ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. at the Bay Center. It also will be livestreamed.

Pensacola State College’s welding program has won a gold-level endorsement from the Central Gulf Industrial Alliance (CGIA) which includes Mississippi, Alabama and parts of the Florida Panhandle.

“For my program, it’s a big deal,” said PSC welding program coordinator Jac Rolison. “It lets us know we’re doing things right and it tells others that we have a quality program that produces quality workers that can go straight into the workforce and make good money.”

The CGIA serves as the voice of industry in the region and is composed of industrial owners, contractors, associates and training organizations. Its evaluations are nationally-recognized and are designed to ensure programs operate at or above industry standards and meet workforce needs.

Saul Flores has grit. The first-generation college graduate from North Carolina University has even made “grit” his personal motto and brand.

The Brooklyn, New York, native shared his “10 Rules of Grit” during his opening keynote address at the third annual Pensacola State College Student Activities Leadership Summit – a virtual event – on Friday, April 23.

Flores was just one of the presenters at the summit, which included workshops on crafting and building a portfolio, PSC’s wellness services and leadership styles/communication.

Closing keynote speaker Abraham Sculley spoke about his mental health struggles while at the University of West Florida in his presentation “Journaling to Wellness.” Sculley’s challenges began his second semester at UWF, and he left the school for three months to deal with his depression and mental well-being. He returned and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2019.
