Retired Pensacola neurosurgeon Dr. Troy Tippett always appreciated Pensacola State College. After all, many of the nurses he worked with in his decades-long career were graduates of the College’s Nursing Program.

Tippett admitted that he didn’t fully appreciate the far-reaching impact PSC has on student lives and the Northwest Florida community until he was appointed to the College’s Board of Trustees just over a year ago.

“It’s as if my eyes were opened,” he said. “I had no idea what a crown jewel PSC is in our community.”

Now Tippett has decided to make an impact of his own.

He has established the Tippett Family Endowed Chair in Science, Technology and Mathematics at the College. It is Pensacola State’s 13th Endowed Chair.

Endowed chairs are prestigious academic appointments that are crucial to the recruitment of world-class faculty members to lead, mentor and instruct PSC students. The awards supplement faculty members’ salaries while financially supporting their research, professional development, service activities and/or academic programs.

Legacy of beloved visual arts professor Bill Clover continues with 2022 Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl fundraiser for Manna
Bill Clover made a difference in this world. Even though the beloved Pensacola State College visual arts professor died in May 2018, he’s still making a difference.

The 2022 Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl fundraiser for Manna Food Bank Inc. will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 25, at the Lou Ross Center on the College’s Pensacola campus.

Manna offers numerous programs to fight hunger in Northwest Florida. The organization’s mission is to offer emergency food assistance, service the food-related needs of vulnerable populations, and engage the entire community in the fight against hunger. Manna works with and helps supply food to 22 community partners, including PSC’s Pirates CARE team, which operates the College’s food pantries.

Clover volunteered at Manna for more than a decade and helped the nonprofit raise nearly $300,000 during Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl fundraisers. He was awarded the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award for contributing more than 7,000 hours to Manna. He created more than 6,500 handcrafted bowls for the annual fundraiser, which began in 2006.

Bowls for fundraisers are now created by the PSC Visual Arts Department and the First City Art Center.

“He was instrumental in creating this event,” Manna Associate Executive Director Kerri Smayda said of Clover. “This is Manna’s only annual large fundraiser. The funds raised through this event really gives us the ability to continue serving local folks. (Clover) was one of the people who made it possible for us to have the impact we do.”

Clover’s friend and fellow PSC Visual Arts instructor Mark Hopkins said Clover “was passionate about helping people.”

He was the College’s longest-serving faculty member, spending 52 years at the College.”

“He was asked to be part of (the fundraiser), but that was the kind of thing he did anyway,” Hopkins said. “He truly believed in giving back to people. He had a huge heart.”

Tickets for the Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl fundraiser are $40 in advance and $50 the day of the event. Each ticket includes a handcrafted bowl thrown by a local potter.

PSC wins 61 awards, including Best of Show, at local ADDYs
There were only 16 Pensacola State College students who competed in the AAF Pensacola 2022 American Advertising Awards Gala on Feb. 19 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach

Still, those talented 16 students took home 60 awards at the event – 21 gold ADDY Awards, 38 silver ADDY Awards and the Best of Show.

“We did very well, which is to be expected,’’ said PSC Graphic Design instructor Mark Hopkins. “I hear from local advertising companies who always tell me they can’t wait to see our students’ work.”

In all, 14 PSC graphic design students and two PSC photography students competed at the local level.

Gold award winners will automatically be entered into the AAF District 4 Awards Gala in Orlando on April 23. Students who won Silver awards can submit their work to the competition for an additional fee.

Winners at the District 4 level – which includes Florida and the Caribbean – will advance to a national competition later in the year.

PSC Graphic Design sophomore Danielle Carroll won two Gold awards and two Silver awards at the local level.

She also won Best in Show for a vinyl cover design and illustration inspired by a photograph of legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur.

Carroll credited Hopkins and her classmates for the strong showing at the local awards ceremony.

“(Hopkins) has done a great job putting this together and getting us ready,’’ Carroll said. “Everyone is super talented and the energy we’re able to create in each class is really productive.”

Congratulations to the Pensacola State College Human Resources Department for winning a free lunch sponsored by the PSC chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges.

Human Resources collected more money — $97.63 — than any other department during the weeklong Coin Challenge to raise extra funds for the United Way of West Florida.

Those funds will be added to the donations from PSC employees who contribute to the College’s United Way of West Florida campaign, which runs through Friday, Feb. 25. In total, PSC departments raised $304.48 in the Coin Challenge.

There are two ways to give to PSC’s United Way campaign:

  1. Online donations with a credit/debit card. The donation may be a one-time contribution or a recurring one. Click here to donate.
  2. Payroll deductions set up in Workday using the handy job aid, which was attached to an email sent by campaign co-coordinator Anita Spicer to all PSC employees on Feb. 9.

Anyone who sets up a $5 or more payroll reduction per paycheck — or who already has set up the deduction — will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Target gift card donated by Debbie Douma, PSC Dean of Grants and Federal Programs. Douma also serves on the United Way of West Florida board.

“The thing I like about United Way of West Florida is that the funds stay in our community,” Douma said. “Our students live in this community, so when you give to United Way of West Florida, you know your money will be here and help our families and our students.”
