PSC programs, initiatives impress state Dept. of Education CTE head

Henry Mack III had heard things about Pensacola State College. Good things.

Mack III, the Florida Department of Education’s Chancellor for Career, Technical and Adult Education, visited Pensacola State for the first time on Wednesday ─ touring various CTE and Adult Education programs.

“Pensacola State College’s reputation precedes it in Tallahassee,” Mack III said. “As we think about an integrated CTE workforce education system, I’m interested in those colleges like Pensacola State that do it all, frankly.”

PSC's 2nd-ever capital campaign has raised more than 50 percent of goal

President Ed Meadows raised a glass to toast donors and supporters who have helped the College raise more than $6.2 million in an ambitious “Your Community — Your Legacy” capital campaign.

That’s 56 percent of the $11 million campaign goal that already has been met. And though the campaign began its quiet phase in December 2018, it wasn’t until a recent press conference at the new Baars Building on the Pensacola campus that the campaign was unveiled to the public. The campaign will fund workforce development, student scholarships, a conference center and College growth and expansion.

Since the 2018 launch, 570 donors have contributed funds to the “Your Community — Your Legacy” campaign, with 226 donors giving $1,000 or more.

“The College turns 73 years old this year and this marks the second capital campaign in our history,” Meadows said at the press conference, which was attended by Florida College System Chancellor Kathryn Hebda, Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson IV, and numerous PSC Foundation Board of Governors members and PSC donors. “At the halfway point, we have already raised more than was raised in our first campaign almost 20 years ago.”

PSC’s Culinary program begins Tuesday takeout meals in March

Beginning in March, you won’t have to worry if you don’t land a coveted reservation for one of Pensacola State College Culinary program’s popular Lunch & Dinner Series events.

Because soon, you’ll be able to order a meal for carry-out and pick it up after work to take home to feast upon.

On Tuesdays, beginning March 2, the Pensacola State Culinary Management Program will begin offering takeout meals, priced at $10. Each meal will consist of an entrée, two side dishes, bread and a dessert.

“We’re targeting the staff on (the Pensacola) campus," said PSC Chef and Culinary instructor David Langham. “We will have the meals ready when people leave for work so they can swing by and pick them up.”

PSC Culinary instructor Joni Verlin said the takeout meals are being offered because the Lunch & Dinner series events always sell out quickly.

“We’ve had a lot of people asking out about to-go meals," Verlin said. “Now, even if people can’t get reservations, they can still get a great meal prepared by PSC students.”

The Lunch & Dinner series, featuring meals served in the Molly McGuire Culinary Arts Dining Room, takes place each Wednesday and Thursday, also beginning in March.

All menus and meals, including the takeout orders, are designed, prepared and served by students in the Culinary Management program. But no, menus have not yet been completed.

Wednesday’s lunches are served at 11:30 a.m. and feature international dishes. Thursday’s dinners are staggered, with seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday’s dinners feature classic French cuisine and service.

Wednesday’s lunch price is $12.50. Thursday’s dinners are $20.

The Culinary Management program will no longer use the online reservation program it has used in recent years and will have a new program up before service starts so people can place Tuesday to-go orders and make lunch and dinner reservations.
