Pensacola State College celebrated its diversity and commitment to minority students on Feb. 28 at the annual African American Memorial Endowment Scholarship Program and the Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins’ “Live Your Dream” Scholarship Banquet. Eight students received scholarships that will help them continue their education at PSC. Three students ─ Kiara Betts, Kaytrenia Boyd and Shanel Gainey ─ received the Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins’ “Live Your Dream” Scholarship. Five students received the African American Memorial Endowment Scholarship: Bryanna Bush, Alvin Gordon Jr., Akira Hunter, Makya Richardson and Alexus Turner. Wiggins was the president of the all-black Booker T. Washington Junior College when it merged with then- Pensacola Junior College in 1965. The Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream” scholarship was established in 2005. Troy Moon was there and filed this report.

A rtists' donations brighten corridors, galleries of Pensacola State
Following their joint exhibition, "Michael Davey and Tracy Spikes: Untitled," in 2019, the artists agreed to donate two pieces to the Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department. Spikes donated "Station," seen at left in the photo, and "Pirates of Nonsense." Both are acrylic paint and plaster on canvas. Davey donated "Summer," at right in photo, and "Canyon." Both are mixed-media on wooden panel. "Station" and "Summer" currently are hanging in the upstairs lobby of Building 7 on the Pensacola campus and are part of the College's permanent collection. "Pirates of Nonsense" and "Summer" will be auctioned at a later date to raise funds for the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts . Long-time friends, Davey and Spikes have a special connection to the Pensacola area where they met. It was only fitting that they came together to exhibit their work in the Switzer Gallery. Both artists are quite prolific and continue to produce work daily. The retrospective exhibition embodied an array of media including painting, drawing, and photography, reflecting the artists’ unique styles and interpretations of their adventures, experiences, and memories.
PSC Senior Citizens Club gives $2,000 for performing arts program
Members of the PSC Senior Citizens Club recently presented the PSC Foundation with $2,000 targeted for the College's performing arts programs.

"We've been the Lyceum performances so many times and have just been blown away," says club president Theresa Gels, seen at left in the photo, with James Manara, club founder and former president; club member Sharon Livingstons; and Foundation finance director Susan Peaden. Gels says the club has given $2,000 to the College each year for the past four years.

The PSC Senior Citizens Club, which meets at 2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the PSC Pensacola campus Student Center, is open to anyone 60 years of age or older, or who has a spouse of that age. (Members also must be citizens of Florida.) The next meeting will be March 17.

"We have two ice cream socials a year, an annual picnic at Bayview Park, and recreational swimming, tennis, pinochle and bowling," Gels says. "And we have a good time at our meetings. At Christmas we have a blowout, everyone gets a Christmas gift."

PSC to hold ‘Thank a Donor Day’ on April 1
Students can sign cards on three campuses to show their appreciation
Without donors and their generous gifts, Pensacola State College would be ─ really, we don’t even want to think about it too much. It’s not a good thought.

But be assured, there would be fewer scholarships, fewer programs, fewer facility upgrades, less success. Less of everything.

That’s why on Wednesday, April 1, Pensacola State students will have their own chance to say “Thank you” to the numerous donors who support every aspect of the College at various Thank a Donor Day events.

Outdoor tents will be set up on the Pensacola, Milton and Warrington campuses where cards will be available for students to write a thank-you message to a donor.

Thank a Donor Day events will be 8 to 10 a.m. at the Student Services building, Bldg. 4200, on the Milton campus, featuring a breakfast of doughnuts, breakfast bars, coffee and juices.

On the Warrington campus, events will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Student Center, Bldg. 3600, featuring a lunch of pizza and Coke products.

The Pensacola campus will welcome visitors from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Library main entrance, Bldg. 20, with snacks of chips, candy, cookies and Coke products.

“There will be hundreds of cards so that students can write their own individual ‘Thank you,’ “ said Andrea Krieger, PSC Executive Director of Institutional Development. “Faculty and staff can write a message as well, and then we will send them out to individual donors.”

Krieger said it’s important that donors understand the impact of their donations on students.

“It’s so donors can feel a personal connection," Krieger added. “It allows them to see the impact through these personal messages. There’s a huge benefit to that.”

PSC student Stephen Walls, a gonzo culinary explorer who specializes in “Big Food," is ready to send a message.

“Donors are extremely important in education," said Walls, who cooks under the moniker “Walls Clay.” Walls said donors “touch so many lives on so many levels. I am in the GED program and we also depend on funding. Thanks to donors I have a second chance to get my fundamental education and for that I’m extremely grateful.”
