We have entered the Renew My Church phase set forth by the Archdiocese of Chicago. No structural changes are happening for Saint Clement; however, we are all called to a Spiritual Renewal. Every week, we will share a reflection on RMC from a member of our parish family.

Tenebrae
Wednesday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m.
|
Join us for Tenebrae, a 1,000 year-old service filled with the singing of Psalms and the proclamation of Scripture.
Tenebrae is the Latin word for shadows or darkness. Tenebrae helps to set the tone for the coming three days of the Triduum (the three most sacred days of of the Christian calendar). Seven candles are lit in the church. The candles are gradually extinguished throughout the liturgy until the church is plunged into darkness and a thunderous noise envelops the space. One candle finally returns to the church, thereby bringing peace and illumination, symbolizing the continual light of Christ.
If you love the vocal gifts from our choir members or have never been to Holy Week at Saint Clement, we urge you to join us for Tenebrae. Many parishioners have expressed that this is their favorite service of the year, and after two years of pandemic hiatus, we are so pleased to welcome you to Tenebrae.

Holy Thursday - April 14
Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7:00p.m.
|
The first night of the Triduum is Holy Thursday. Join us as we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 p.m. We proclaim the Gospel of John, where Jesus as humble servant, washes the feet of the disciples. He give us his Mandatum (mandate) - “Love one another, as I have loved you.” At this Mass, we also recall Jesus establishing two of the sacraments; the sacrament of Eucharist and of the Holy Orders. Taking, breaking, and blessing the bread and giving us the command, “Do this in memory of me,” Jesus invited his followers to remember, celebrate and honor his presence in the Eucharist.
Another very unique element happens at the end of the Holy Thursday liturgy. There is no blessing or fanfare. Instead, the entire congregation processes with song outside the church and into the lower level chapel. We process following the presence of Christ in the Eucharistic bread symbolizing our journey with him to Gethsemane. The chapel remains open until midnight for people to pray and keep watch with our Lord at the altar of repose.
We invite you to join us for Holy Thursday Mass. Individuals, couples, and families can all take part in the washing of feet ritual, the visual reminder for us to be of service to each other.

|
Good Friday - April 15
Liturgy of the Passion at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
|
The second night of the Triduum is Good Friday. Join us for the Liturgy of the Passion at either 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Good Friday is the only day that out of grief the church does not celebrate the Eucharist. The church is dark, and we begin in silence. The presider and ministers lay face down on the floor as the congregation kneels, remembering Christ’s Passion on the cross. The Passion on Good Friday is proclaimed from the Gospel of John who portrays Jesus as humble king. John helps us to remember that through the glorious cross, we are given life.
The general intercessions on Good Friday take a different form, a more profound and ancient form of intercessory prayer. We pray for specific intentions, both for the church and for the world, for unity, acceptance, and peace. Something we desperately need in 2022.
On Good Friday, we also have time for adoration of the cross. The cross is unveiled in the back of the church and processed up the aisle as we sing an acclamation remembering that it is through the cross that we are set free. Everyone is welcome to take time to kneel, say a prayer, and individually touch the cross, adoring the sacred tree on which hung the Savior of the world.
The past few years, and few months, have been so difficult and dark. Jesus felt all of that on the day he died for us. Come join us in prayer on Good Friday as we honor and remember Jesus’ suffering and death.

|
Holy Saturday - April 16
Easter Vigil at 8:00 p.m.
|
The final night of the Triduum is our Easter Vigil. We gather at 8:00 p.m. outside the church, where a fire is burning. In fact, the Overcome cards that we all wrote out at the beginning of Lent will be burned at this time. We light our new paschal candle from this fire and process it into the church. The light spreads to the entire congregation as we light our candles, symbolizing the light of Christ carried throughout the world.
In the candlelight we proclaim the glory of God’s saving works in the Exsultet. A series of Scripture readings follow, where we recall God’s action throughout history. With fanfare and glorious music, we proclaim the resurrection of our Lord.
Following the homily, adults who have participated in our RCIA program are baptized and received into the Catholic Church. We have 16 women and men who will be joining our community at this year’s Easter Vigil. We will all be invited to renew our baptismal promise and bless ourselves from the water in the baptismal font. This is always a joyous moment!
The liturgy culminates with a celebration of thanksgiving and our participation in the Eucharistic feast. Many parishioners find this to be the most beautiful liturgy of the entire year. From watching the light fill every corner of the church, to reflecting on the many passages from the Bible, to welcoming new members to our parish family, this is a must attend night. Please, come join us! All will be welcome to join us in congratulating our new members at the reception in the courtyard after Mass.

Staff Scripture Reflection excerpt:
Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
by Martina Ricca, Amate House Fellow & Outreach Coordinator
|
"Will you follow [Jesus] all the way to the Cross? Ultimately, that is where He is leading you. The Cross is where Redemption is found. Follow Him. Feel His hand in yours. Secure and firm, never forceful or commanding. Risk the discomfort of walking with Him, especially this week, as He leads you to the place of Victory. He enters the city with honor, and His death proves the triumph over anything that could cause us pain or discomfort or dissatisfaction or fear. With His life, he secured the promise of safety for us all. Let Him lead you to safety."

Update on our Building Repair Expenses and Upcoming Dome Project
Thank you to our Community of Shepherds!
|
We wanted to express our gratitude to the members of our Community of Shepherds. Members of the Community of Shepherds make an additional fiscal year donation of $1,500 or more for the maintenance and upkeep and improvement of our spectacular parish Church and buildings.
Thanks to their generous donations, we have been able to complete many necessary building projects throughout the parish. We want to provide transparency around where their funds are being spent, so below is a recap of the projects completed this fiscal year (from July 2021 through Feb 2022). As you can see, it has proven to be quite expensive to maintain our church and school buildings.
|
Of course, our expenses do not stop there. We have the huge impending project to repair the Dome which will be a primary focus in 2022-2023. Please continue reading for a detailed update on the status of this project.
|
DOME PROJECT STATUS UPDATE
|
The 100-year-old Dome over the Saint Clement Church altar is supported by 16 large arched steel trusses. Several years ago, we became aware that some of the trusses had deteriorated at their base due to moisture and rust over the years. We completed two sets of engineering inspections and surveys which confirmed the problem and its seriousness. We have now chosen one of the engineering firms to design a solution to repair the Dome which will keep it safely in place for another 100 years.
|
The project, at this point, is in the information gathering phase. Our engineering consultant, Thornton Tomasetti, has been up in the Dome, opened the masonry at several points, taken measurements, and made observations. They also gathered every bit of historical and comparable dome information that they could lay their hands on to build a database from which to begin to make assumptions and theoretically "test" various potential methods of repair. At this stage, the question revolves around the choice of repairing the steel of the truss base (where there is deterioration and material loss) or transferring the load at the base of the truss to a concrete "encasement" which would hold the steel truss in place. If this all sounds complicated; it certainly is. Our Saint Clement Project Team just finished meetings with two potential contractors to get their opinions about these two different methods of restoring the truss support structure of the dome. There are some very complex issues involved and many variables to be considered. Thornton Tomasetti (TT) is building the information base as quickly as they can to allow us to make our own educated decisions going forward - including the decision about what schedule to adopt for our needed fundraising and actual start of work.
We will continue to keep you updated with the status of the Dome Project as we also invite you to consider your support of it. Stay tuned for more information forthcoming with regards to the associated capital campaign. As always, we invite you to consider your ongoing support or invite others to join this group. Thank you again for your continued to support to Saint Clement.

Making a gift to Saint Clement Parish from your IRA
|
We Love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19)
Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day, we have the opportunity to be the face of Jesus to others. Please consider making a gift from your individual retirement plan (IRA) that benefits you, Saint Clement and those we serve and support. A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals age 70½ or older to authorize their IRA administrator to make a direct transfer of funds from their IRA to qualified charities, tax-free.
There are three main benefits of giving with a QCD:
- If you are 72 years old or older, the amount you transfer can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution.
- The amount transferred directly to charity does not generate taxable income, which may reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
- Your gift will be immediately used, allowing you to see the impact of your gift now.
If you would like more information on how to make a QCD gift to Saint Clement, please contact Joan Weber on our staff at [email protected] or 773-281-0371.
