Despite the sweeping success of Initiative 83 in our 2024 election cycle - passed in 73% to 27% and won a majority of the voters in every precinct in the city - the Council for the District of Columbia chose to keep our primary closed. The Council funded implementation of Ranked Choice Voting, which was the first part of the initiative, but it chose to deny non-affiliated voters the second, more significant, Initiative 83 reform: opening our primary. They did this, I believe, because all thirteen of them, including the two “independents” are all partisan Democrats and they wanted to keep the Democrat political monopoly in D.C. effective.
Well, if you can’t beat them, join them.
Presently approximately 84,000 of D.C.’s registered voters, about 18%, are non-affiliated. There are about 24,000 Republicans in DC. These voters do not wish to be Democrats, but they best become Democrats now because our city’s leadership is about to significantly change for the first time in decades. Except for the second at-large council position, the general election in D.C. is meaningless. The Democratic Primary is everything.
Just prior to Thanksgiving mayor Muriel Bowser announced that she is not running for a fourth term. The frontrunners for mayor are now progressive Ward 4 councilwoman Jeneese Lewis George versus establishment Democrat At-Large councilman Kenyan McDuffie. Additional contenders are bound to emerge.
In Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton, our 18-term delegate to the House of Representatives, is physically incapable of running for re-election and her re-election coffers are empty. Even if she wanted to run, her campaign would not be able to afford to pay anyone to get signatures for her to achieve a position on the ballot.
Voting in the 2026 Democrat primary election in the District, is a must.
So, to the over 100,000 non-Democrat DC voters I urge you to follow my lead: become a Democrat prior to the June primary and then vote in it. You can re-register as un-affiliated or as a Republican in July.
