Policy School Director Explains the Plastics Paradox: From Convenience to Crisis


At the Planet Action 2024 summit held on the MIT campus on Nov 16, Policy School Director Maria Ivanova delivered a TEDx talk on “The Plastic Paradox: Our Lasting Legacy.”


"Plastic bottles generate enough waste annually to fill a line of 40-ton trucks stretching from New York to Bangkok," she noted, "and 91 percent of plastics is never recycled. We need collective action."


In addition to our growing plastic footprint, Prof. Ivanova evoked the hazards microplastics pose to both human and planetary health, the role of art in raising awareness, and the potential of cities, companies, and campuses to lead the change that urgently needs to happen.

Student Spotlight: Bella Wood '26


Bella Wood (MPA '26) is a ninth-generation New Mexico cattle rancher, who juggles running Ranch Lab and the Institute for Ecology, Scholarship, and Health with pursuing an MPA in Boston. In this spotlight interview, Bella discusses her collaboration with her octogenarian grandparents in stewarding 14,000 acres and her commitment to scaling up sustainability solutions.

Northeastern Delegation Engages in Pivotal Plastics Negotiations in South Korea


Policy School Director Maria Ivanova headed the Northeastern delegation at the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to create a global treaty on plastics. Eight faculty and students traveled to Busan, South Korea, to participate in these historic global negotiations. They held a side event on the importance of disclosure and reporting in the new agreement in collaboration with CDP, a think tank in the UK. 

Policy School Hosts Election and Post-Election Day 2024 Activities in Boston, Arlington, and Oakland


On Nov 5th, the Policy School and Northeastern Association of Policy School Students (NAPPS) hosted "Relax and Refresh: Election Day 2024," creating welcoming spaces on the Boston and Arlington campuses for students, faculty, and staff to unwind on a day full of anticipation." On Nov 6, the Policy School/MPA program and the Mills College Center for Transformative Action hosted a post-election panel discussion on the Oakland campus.

At a Nov 16th ceremony held at the Boston Public Library, Prof. Ted Landsmark, in recognition of his legacy as a civic planner, educator, and civil rights advocate, received the Druker Award, presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding and important contributions to the world of urban art, architecture, and design.

Prof. Nishith Prakash Tackles Education Gender Gap


Prof. Nisthith Prakash delivered a Nov 14th keynote lecture at the 5th KDI-World Bank (DIME) Development Impact Conference in Seoul, South Korea. In his presentation, Prof. Prakash shared his decade-long work on addressing the gender gap in education.

Prof. Serena Alexander Shares Resilience Planning Research at the Federal Level


Prof. Serena Alexander and PhD student Carmella Munyuzangabo presented their research on freight and rail resilience planning at Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado.

Prof. Tracy Corley attended the 11th Annual Bloomberg CityLab summit in Mexico City on Oct 12th-16th. She connected with participatory research collaborators and mentees from London and Rio de Janeiro at the invite-only global cities summit organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Aspen Institute.

Prof. Moira Zellner Explores the Promise of Digital Twins to Bolster Green Infrastructure Planning


Prof. Moira Zellner presented a Nov 5th talk on "Realizing the Potential of Digital Twins Through Community-led, Science-driven Participatory Modeling: A Case in Green Infrastructure Planning." She is co-director of the newly renamed NULab for Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science.

Prof. Joan Fitzgerald Breaks Down Opportunities Powered by Boston’s Green New Deal and Climate Action Plan


The City of Boston hosted representatives from the OECD and six European cities. Each city shared insights on their initiatives. Prof. Joan Fitzgerald presented research from Northeastern’s C2C and Dukakis Center research on occupational and skill requirements for Boston’s Green New Deal and Climate Action Plan.

Prof. Ted Landmark Reflects on the Legacy of Desegregation in the Boston Public Schools


Prof. Ted Landsmark attended the MIT Blueprint Labs panel discussion titled "50 years after Garrity: School integration and performance in Boston Public Schools." On the 50th anniversary of the court-ordered decision that mandated busing for 18,000 students, the Nov 7th panel brought together community members, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to reflect on educational equity.

Prof. Nishith Prakash Assesses Measures to Curb Public Sexual Harassment in India


In collaboration with the Hyderabad City Police, Prof. Nishith Prakash evaluated the effectiveness of their Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Teams in combating sexual harassment in public spaces. His paper on this topic was recently accepted for publication in the Quarterly Journal of Economics.

Prof. Mai’a Cross Reflects on the Global Impact of the U.S. Presidential Election


Prof. Mai'a Cross moderated a Nov 21st Center for International Affairs and World Cultures panel to explore the implications of the recent presidential election outcome for U.S. foreign policy, Russia’s and China’s domestic politics, and the relationships among these players.

Prof. Timothy Hoff Offers Insights on the Future of Medical Care


Prof. Timothy Hoff was invited to deliver the Bates-Mitchell Lectureship seminar to the University of Virginia Department of Family Medicine. The title of his Oct 15th talk was “The Future of Family Medicine Has to Look Like This.”

PhD Student Istiakh Ahmed gave a Nov 9th talk on "Powering Justice: Climate Finance for Change in Tumultuous Times" at the Environmental Joy: Roadmaps for Resistance, Resilience, and Thriving conference at Yale University.

Johan Arango-Quirogo Studies Links Between Climate Change and Biodiversity at COP16


PhD student Johan Arango-Quiroga traveled to Cali, Colombia to attend the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16). He focused on environmental action led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and observed negotiations seeking to strengthen the linkages between climate change and biodiversity.

Maria Salim and Prof. Lily Song Examine History of Black Property Injustices in Boston


MUPP student Maria Salim and Prof. Lily Song jointly presented their research at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) 2024 Annual Conference in Seattle. The title of their presentation was "Unsettled Accounts: Participatory research on Black property ownership and unjust takings in Boston."

Students Hold Events on Leadership and Intergenerational Equity During Global Plastics Negotiations 


At the fifth session for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) for a legally binding global treaty on plastics, Policy School students Alexandra Carlotto, Marcello Fischer, Clara Copp-LaRocque, and Olga Skaredina collaborated with College of Arts, Media, and Design’s Kylee Hendrie ‘25, and College of Science’s Nicole Vandale to host “Beyond Promises: Delivering on Plastics Commitments, Leadership from the Middle-Out." Under the leadership of Profs. Maria Ivanova and Aron Stubbins, the event brought together diverse voices to explore the transformative role of non-state actors in advancing plastics policy. 

Olga Skaredina Co-Organizes Youth Assembly


PhD student Olga Skaredina co-organized the Nov 24th Youth and Stakeholder Assembly on Plastic Pollution in Busan, Republic of Korea, ahead of the official start of the 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) on Plastic Pollution. The event set the stage for intergenerational and multi-stakeholder dialogue on a global plastics treaty.
