From October 23 to 25, the Policy School took an active role in the 2024 NASPAA Conference in Washington, D.C., contributing to key discussions and initiatives aimed at advancing public service education.

Women Deans and Directors of Public Service Schools at NASPAA Conference


On October 23, over 20 women leaders from NASPAA policy schools, including Policy School Director Maria Ivanova, convened for a Gathering of Women Deans and Directors at Northeastern’s Arlington, VA campus. The meeting provided a platform for sharing strategies, strengthening networks, and advancing leadership in public service education.

On October 22, the Global Environmental Governance Project at Northeastern University led by Prof. Maria Ivanova hosted the inaugural session of The Ambuli Dialogues: Plastics Treaty Prospects – Strategy Session 30 Days Before Busan at Northeastern’s Arlington campus. The session focused on strategic discussions and preparations ahead of the pivotal negotiations on a new global treaty on plastic pollution.

PhD Happy Hour


On October 5, PhD students came together at The Westland restaurant for a lively happy hour, enjoying appetizers, drinks, and conversations about their latest academic pursuits and personal projects. The gathering provided a relaxed space to connect and exchange ideas beyond the classroom.

Global Action for Policy (GAP) Seminar Featuring Xi Song  


Invited guest speaker Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania Xi Song delivered an October 8 Global Action for Policy (GAP) Initiative Seminar Series talk on "The Present and Future Dementia Caregiving Demand in China: Kinship-Based Projections and Global Comparisons."

MUPP Town Hall Seminar  


On October 9, MUPP students gathered for a Town Hall Seminar with Program Director Gavin Shatkin to discuss upcoming initiatives, including the creation of a new student organization focused on planning. The meeting fostered dialogue and collaboration, empowering students to take an active role in shaping the program’s future.

GAP Seminar featuring Prof. Jeevant Rampal


Jeevant Rampal, an Associate Professor of Economics at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, presented a October 14 talk on "Lottery Based Auctions" as part of the Global Action for Policy (GAP) Initiative Seminar Series.

Director's Dialogue: Building a Connected Community


On October 15, Prof. Maria Ivanova hosted a Director's Dialogue, creating a space for students to openly discuss their experiences, aspirations, and their role in shaping the future of the Policy School. The conversation fostered a sense of community and collaboration, reinforcing our shared vision for an inclusive and impactful academic environment.

Students Engage in Capstone Information Session


On October 30, more than 40 Policy School students attended a hybrid Capstone Information session led by Prof. Kimberly D. Lucas. Students learned how Capstone ties the unique skill sets and knowledge of local partners with the equally unique skill sets and knowledge of graduating students to meaningfully push forward a project identified by our partners.

Prof. Maria Ivanova Speaks at Global Sustainability Summit


On October 5, Policy School Director Maria Ivanova joined a distinguished panel at Northeastern's Global Sustainability Summit, hosted by the Center for Emerging Markets at D'Amore-McKim. Prof. Ivanova contributed her expertise on environmental governance, exploring strategies to drive impactful and sustainable change on a global scale.

On October 5-6, Prof. Moira Zellner participated in the "Meet a Scientist" session at Boston’s Museum of Science, as part of the Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Celebration. Prof. Zellner shared her research and insights, inspiring attendees and fostering a deeper appreciation for the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx scientists.

Prof. Ted Landsmark Participates in Renaming Ceremony


On October 26, Prof. Ted Landsmark joined Boston Mayor Michelle Wu in a moment of restorative justice and reconciliation, as the city renamed Flora Way in honor of an 18th-century Black woman who was enslaved in Boston. The ceremony highlighted the importance of acknowledging and commemorating Boston’s complex history.

Prof. Matthew Attends Ross at Bridge Event at the Urban Institute


Prof. Matthew Ross, recently appointed as a Criminal Justice Research Fellow at Arnold Ventures, participated in a Bridge Event at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. The event focused on supporting victims of violent crimes, where Prof. Ross engaged with leading experts to explore strategies for advancing justice and support systems.

Prof. Kim Lucas Joins Panel on Childcare Funding at The Boston Foundation


Prof. Kimberly D. Lucas participated in a panel discussion at The Boston Foundation exploring childcare funding structures and the findings of the report Investments in Early Education and Care in Massachusetts: Celebrating Success, Looking Ahead. Prof. Lucas contributed her expertise on early education policy and its impact on the future of childcare funding in the state.

Fall 2024 Capstone: Exploring Technologists' Pathways to Public Service


Policy School students Kehinde Akande (MPP '25), Emily Henderson (MPA '24), Melissa Pritchard (MPP '25), and Abigail Roberts (MPP '25) are collaborating on a Fall 2024 Capstone project under the guidance of Prof. Neil Kleiman. Partnering with Technologists for the Public Good, the team is examining the challenges technologists encounter when entering the public service sector, using a data-driven policy approach to develop meaningful insights.

Prof. Kim Lucas and Students Collaborate on Family Child Care Report


In Spring 2024, Prof. Kimberly D. Lucas teamed up with students Khaing May Oo (MPP '26), Zoe Madu (MPP '25), and Innocentia Ashai (MA International Affairs '25) to co-author a report titled Understanding ‘Post-Pandemic’ Family Child Care Providers: Why New Providers Entered the Field and Why Others Left. The project, conducted in partnership with Dr. Wendy Wagner Robeson and her undergraduate team at the Wellesley Centers for Women, sheds light on the motivations and challenges faced by family child care providers in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Capstone Students Curate Fall 2024 Spotify Playlist


Policy Capstone students, along with their partners, faculty, and TAs, collaborated to create a Fall 2024 Spotify playlist featuring their favorite motivational tracks. The playlist reflects the team’s shared energy and enthusiasm, offering a soundtrack to stay inspired and productive throughout the semester.
