READING COMPREHENSION

Employing text structure to positively impact comprehension


Students must navigate narrative and expository or informational text genres across all academics. Understanding the structure of these text types can positively impact comprehension in authentic reading contexts. “Proficient readers have a more complete knowledge of how stories and informational text are structured, and they use it in concert with other language processes and skills to construct meaning" (Hennessey, 2000, p.121). Through explicit instruction in text structure, including text features and signal words, students learn the organizing frameworks that make texts cohesive, clear, and meaningful. Such explicit instruction is particularly impactful for students with weak comprehension skills (Wanzek et al., 2020), as these students tend to demonstrate less understanding of text structures and how to apply them to their reading (Oakhill et al., 2015).

Story grammar frames that identify narrative components like problem, and plan to solve the problem, help readers weave the various elements of rich stories together. For expository text, structure-aligned graphic organizers, such as cause-effect and compare-contrast, help readers organize and prioritize what is often new or challenging information. A 2017 meta-analysis (Pyle et al.) showed that instruction in expository text structure had a positive impact on students’ comprehension of expository text, and a more recent meta-analysis (Peng Peng et al., 2023) points to the impact of teaching text structure in combination with other high-impact strategies.

The Windward School and Institute are honored to host featured speaker Amy Margolis, PhD, at the 2023 Fall Community Lecture on Tuesday, October 24.


Dr. Margolis presents Psychological Components of Reading Disabilities: Novel Interventions to Address Anxiety and Executive Functioning. Anxiety and executive function problems are common in youth with reading disabilities. This lecture will explore the ways in which these psychological and neuropsychological factors both influence and are influenced by reading challenges. The application of specific interventions will also be addressed.
