Creating a Home: A Community Effort

Members of Stanwich Church, along with JFS volunteers Kevin Ruebenstahl and Jenny Heffer, transformed an empty apartment into a welcoming home for a family in need, showcasing the power of community support. They worked tirelessly to furnish it with essential items and personal touches.

On the day of the family's arrival, Mauri Clark, Director of World Missions at Stanwich Church, captured the moment perfectly: "The expression on their faces when they walked in was pure joy." This joy reflected the hard work and dedication of all involved. The next night, church members delivered dinner to the family!

The Stanwich Church initiative is a powerful example of how local organizations can make a meaningful difference in the lives of newly arrived families. The smiles that day will resonate far beyond the apartment, embodying hope for a brighter future.

If you are interested in helping with apartment setups, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Melissa Basile-Reolon. We also need furniture and household supplies to create welcoming homes.

Volunteer Spotlight: The Joy of Shopping

Joan and Steve Levine have been involved in JFS Refugee Resettlement work since the first family arrived three years ago. Steve, a retired school psychologist, shopped and donated school supplies, while Joan helped our senior clients from Afghanistan with their complex medication regimens. A retired home care nurse, she made weekly home visits to teach them how to take the appropriate doses, and how to refill prescriptions.

When Ukrainian families began to arrive, Joan filled attractive laundry hampers with housewares to help them start a new home. This concept became our “Welcome Baskets.”

Joan and Steve derive satisfaction from their shopping trips. “I enjoy picking out items that I use in my home, helping a new family feel welcomed and comfortable. It's fun to shop for others knowing how this will help them build a new life,” explained Joan.

For all those shoppers out there, consider purchasing a welcome basket for a new family. It's a fun way to utilize your joy of shopping - for good! Joan and Steve are the parents of JFS CEO Rachel Kornfeld, showing the generational impact of volunteerism and philanthropy. Contact the Volunteer Department if you'd like to provide a welcome basket.
