Hope Credit Union (HOPE) held a grand opening for a new branch at Provine High School on October 10, 2017. Jackson Public Schools and Alignment Jackson have been close partners on this project with HOPE. The branch will be the first student-run credit union in Jackson, Mississippi.

JPS SCHOOLS CELEBRATE COLLEGE SPIRIT DAY 2017
JPS schools celebrated College Spirit Day 2017 on Friday, September 29, 2017. Ask for More Jackson started the program in 2001. Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and First Lady Ebony Lumumba joined Principal Rhoda Yoder at Casey Elementary for College Spirit Day.

DAVIS MAGNET IB ELEMENTARY RENAMED AFTER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
Davis Magnet IB Elementary School has been renamed Barack Obama IB Elementary School.
Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson announced at the Board of Trustees meeting on October 17 that school stakeholders voted on October 5 to rename the school.

JPS FOOD SERVICE EARNS GOLD AWARD FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR
The JPS Food Service Department received the Gold Award from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) Program. The honor goes to school districts that model excellent USDA programs. All of the District's elementary schools have achieved this title for the last five years.

JPS SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANT FOR YOUTH SAFETY CAMPAIGNS
Three JPS high schools are participating in a program geared toward reducing and eliminating gun violence. Forest Hill, Provine, and Wingfield high schools received $1,000 each. The funds will be used for violence prevention programs in 15 Mississippi high schools.

COMCAST AWARDS GRANT TO SPANN ELEMENTARY
The Comcast Foundation awarded a grant of $4,205.81 to Spann Elementary for its partnership during the 16th annual Comcast Cares Day.
Last spring, about 200 volunteers converged upon Spann to beautify the school's grounds. They pressure washed, painted and landscaped with support from Comcast employees.

WALTON AND BROWN BOTTLING CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP
In celebration of Brown Bottling Group's 30-year partnership with Walton Elementary, the company donated $1,000 to the school. The check presentation was made during a special assembly. Brown Bottling also gave each first grader a copy of the book, "Pete the Cat."

JPS ALUM WINS MISS BLACK USA COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR AWARD
Kristy Johnson, Miss Black Mississippi USA, received the national Community Ambassador Award. The award was presented at the national Miss Black USA Pageant held this summer in Washington D.C.
On October 21, 2017, she will crown the next Miss Black Mississippi USA in Grenada, Mississippi.
