The Power of Real World Learning

Welcome to a new edition of The Beacon Bulletin, where we continue to shine a light on the meaningful work taking place across Halifax County Schools.

At Halifax County Schools, our mission is clear—to create a supportive and positive learning environment that addresses the needs of the whole student. That mission comes to life when students are given opportunities that go beyond traditional instruction and allow them to explore, experiment, and gain real-world experience. Across our school district, there are powerful examples of that commitment in action as our students engage in hands-on STEM learning, earn industry certifications, and explore innovative pathways.

Eighth grade students at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy had an incredible opportunity to visit the East Carolina University Coastal Studies Institute. During this experience, students engaged in hands-on investigations and explored coastal ecosystems, stepping into the role of real scientists. They examined environmental systems, collaborated with peers, and applied STEM concepts in ways that brought their learning to life. Opportunities like these allow our students to see themselves as innovators, problem-solvers, and future leaders.

We are also proud of the incredible accomplishments taking place within our Career and Technical Education programs. Students in the Health Science program recently completed the OSHA-10 certification with an impressive 94 percent passing rate. This rigorous training prepares entry-level healthcare workers to recognize workplace hazards, understand safety protocols, and comply with important regulations. Students also gained knowledge in areas such as HIPAA, personal protective equipment, and infection control—skills that are essential in healthcare settings.

In addition, many of our Health Science students recently earned their First Aid and CPR certification, another important industry credential. These lifesaving skills strengthen their readiness for healthcare careers and empower them with the knowledge to respond in emergency situations.

Hands-on learning is also thriving within our agriculture programs. Students in Sustainable Agriculture Production recently began their beekeeping journey, gaining firsthand experience in sustainable agriculture.

These opportunities reflect the kind of learning experiences we strive to create across Halifax County Schools—experiences that challenge students, spark curiosity, and prepare them for the world beyond the classroom.

Our students are capable of extraordinary things, and when we provide opportunities that inspire and empower them, they continue to rise to the occasion.
