"The Power of Storytelling"
As with all authors, poets, and playwrights we are story tellers. With imaginations that are the reflections and reactions to the real world. Our imagination is our odyssey through the depths of our ever seeking souls as we attempt to reconcile within us the crooked timber of our humanity. And with dauntless fortitude and transparency we share our emotional imaginations in books, poems, and plays to create a social imagination to share in the hope our audiences too will come to appreciate the aesthetic and essence of life. Aristotle identifies imagination as “that in virtue of which an image occurs in us”, and further stated “motivate and guide actions.”
The Demitasse Players is a repertory theater company committed to writing and producing plays and psychotronic movies that address the issues of humanity in distress. Our goal is to shed light on subjects that impact our mental well being and sensibilities; in the hope that our stories will not just simply entertain, but also to educate and mentor our audiences. We want to share our stories with our audiences to make them think, learn, reflect, react, cry, dance, and yes even laugh! at the folly of our human condition. We want to open up our imaginations with you to share our emotions in our mind’s eye.
In closing, I will leave you with the following historical event in ancient Greece confirming the power of storytelling:
After 27 years of fighting between the two most powerful city states Athens and Sparta; the Spartans proved victorious, and were planning to burn Athens to the ground. Of note, Athens was the birthplace of democracy. The night before the planned destruction, the Spartans asked some Athenian actors to stage a play by Athenian playwright Euripides. So moved were the Spartans by the play they decided. “We cannot destroy a city that gives the world such words telling our shared stories” -thus, spared Athens from the torch. The story saved a world in distress, and is it really true the pen is mightier than the sword?
