Horses Are a Family Affair for Guy McElvain ’84, P'14

Following in his parents’ footsteps, Guy McElvain ’84, P'14 – accompanied by his wife Sharon – purchased a plot of land adjacent to his family’s property and took over the family business of cross-breeding Holsteiner horses when his mother, Betty, decided to retire. “Being a family together and doing what we love is a dream come true,” says Guy, who has passed this same love for horses down to his own two children, Chenoa and Clayton ’14, a trainer and business owner specializing in surfacing for equine arenas, respectively. According to Guy, it’s a business in which one never stops learning. “If we build the right infrastructure and support, our children can go into the horse industry as professionals able to support themselves and flourish,” he says.

Tristan White ’14: Mining the Depths of His Passion

“A mining company won’t be in business long if they don’t define the characteristics, the extent, and the concentration of their mineral resource well. So, that’s what I do,” says Class of 2014 Fountain Valley alumnus Tristan White, a senior exploration geologist whose work with the Morenci Mine in Greenlee County, Ariz., consists of planning and executing copper-drilling campaigns. “I’ve always really liked rocks [and] FVS advanced that interest,” says Tristan, who – inspired by FVS faculty like Mr. Gustke – went on to obtain a B.A. in Geology from Colorado College as well as a Geology/Earth Science Certificate of Study Abroad from the University of Canterbury.

Fountain Valley Launches New Website Design

On Monday, Dec. 11, the Office of Communications proudly launched a new website powered by Finalsite, a platform committed to helping schools prepare students to be successful and make the world a better place. The design and production process was made possible by the Communications team along with Chief Operating Officer John Litchenberg P'24 and Dean of Faculty, Equity and Teaching Nathan Eberhart.

Grant Monies Take Students Lightyears From Campus

Thanks to a generous grant from the Lightner Sams Foundation, science classes at Fountain Valley School have gotten a whole lot brighter over the past several months! Using funds from the grant, the School purchased two telescopes and a portable 5” Newtonian reflector, along with soft cases, a solar filter, and a Wi-Fi module, for detailed viewing of planets, asteroids, and comets in our solar system, and deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulae.

Celebrating the Signing of Two Division 1 Equestrian Riders

Amidst the Prairie campus that Fountain Valley School students call “home,” two seniors, Abby Tibbits and Malia Sherer, gathered in the Julie and Spencer Penrose Athletic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 8, to celebrate National Signing Day. Joined by their families and the School’s proud team of riding coaches, Abby and Malia signed letters of intent to compete at two U.S. Division 1 schools.


Abby, an avid rider since age seven, will take her expertise in Western riding to the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) in the fall. Read more »

According to a study by Nielsen, 92% of consumers trust recommendations from friends and family over other forms of advertising. Registration is open now for the Fountain Valley School Summer Session; spread the word about FVS’s two- and four-week Summer Session options for residential and day campers ages 11-16. With FVS, campers can build their confidence, learn something new, make friends, overcome challenges, and have fun while experiencing academic enrichment and summertime adventure in Colorado Springs. Families who register by Feb. 1 will receive a 10% discount on their child’s Fountain Valley School Summer Session tuition!

Fall '23 Athenaea Literary Magazine Available Online

The fall 2023 issue of FVS's student-produced magazine of art and original literary works, Athenaea, is now available online! Since 1930, two editions of Athenaea have been released yearly, each containing student poetry and short stories, and often paired with original works created by the School’s Visual Arts students. This fall’s issue received the rank of Excellent in the 2023 National Council of Teachers of English's (NCTE) "Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines" program.

Television Commercial Premieres in New Year

On Jan. 1, 2024, a 30-second television commercial premiered across the State of Colorado, highlighting the unique aspects – location, place-based learning, a global education, leadership, and discovery – that make Fountain Valley unlike any other independent high school nationwide.

2024 Reunion Weekend Registration to Open February 5

You don’t want to miss this year’s Party on the Prairie! Registration for FVS’s upcoming Reunion Weekend – beginning May 30 at the Class of 1969 Mountain Campus and continuing on the Prairie from May 31-Jun. 2, 2024 – opens on Feb. 5. This year’s Reunion Weekend will pay special tribute to alumni with milestone graduation years ending in ‘4’ and ‘9’.
