St. Fidelis: Sister Ruth Lautt's Street Outreach Ministry For the Homeless Featured in The Tablet
Two years ago at her parish St. Fidelis in College Point, S. Ruth Lautt founded a street outreach ministry which distributes supplies such as sandwiches, fresh produce, canned goods toiletries and clothing to those who are homeless. S. Ruth's full-time ministry is her legal practice, where she represents immigrants seeking political asylum, yet she has also worked with the homeless for about forty years. This year she celebrates her 25th Jubilee as a Sister of St. Dominic of Amityville. Click here to read about her beautiful ministry as featured in The Tablet, Brooklyn's Diocesan Newspaper. Also, for a podcast that explores S. Ruth's ministry as a lawyer, click here. The podcast was produced by our own "Podcast Nun" Sister Ave Clark of Heart to Heart Ministry.
In the left picture, Parish Outreach Director for Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sister Kathy Somerville and Volunteer Michelle Bazzini (in the window) help Maria de los Santos at the food pantry, a distribution center for Plant A Row produce. At right, Somerville chats with Plant A Row Founder Marvin Makofsky.
S. Kathy Somerville Highlighted in Newsday Article
At then end of April, S. Kathy Somerville was featured in a Newsday article highlighting an initiative called "Plant A Row" which grows fresh produce for those with food insecurities. Marvin Makofsky initiated this effort and partners with many people in the community, such as Sister Kathy, to grow, transport and distribute the food. Newsday subscribers can click here for the online article. Read an excerpt here: "Sister' is Sister Kathy Somerville, Order of Preachers, the Dominican nun who has been running the church’s outreach center for 40 years. The donated produce, she said, is a much-needed addition to the center’s offerings.
“In the beginning, we only provided canned food,” she said. “Fresh fruits and vegetables were more of a luxury” for the 140 families who receive food through the program. “I have never seen anyone as passionate about anything as Marvin is,” Somerville said. “You can’t say no to him because if you say no, he’s just going to come back at you,” she added with a chuckle. Not that she ever tried, she admitted.
“I think what makes Marvin’s job easier — and my job easier — is that the Port Washington community is just so generous. We couldn’t do here what we do if it weren’t for the community,” Somerville said. “The amount he has accomplished in getting people involved is just incredible.'"
Easter Reflection from S. Pat Duffy
HAPPY EASTER! You may want to say that I am rather late in this greeting, but Easter begins on Easter Sunday and lasts until Pentecost, approximately 40 days. Like Mary at the tomb, the disciples in the upper room and the couple on the road to Emmaus sharing a meal with a stranger - the Risen Lord is with us. We only need to SEE him among us. This week is my birthday and I love being born in this season of Alleluias. (Don't worry I know they are not for me!) It is my custom to give a gift for my birthday.  I truly want to share with you the great gift of Christ Present in our lives in a special Easter Reflection. I hope you can join me and invite a friend or family member to join us. Please click here to visit S. Pat's Facebook page and here is the direct youtube link. I look forward to being with you. Love, Sister Pat

Workers on Long Island Unionizing
At Pindar:
Some good news for farmworkers. The Long Island Jobs with Justice Committee, along with other groups, have been working very hard to get New York State funds for Essential Excluded Workers as well as for decent salaries and health care coverage for farmworkers which also includes those men and women who work on vineyards. With the support of State Senator Jessica Ramos, the vineyard workers at Pindar Winery are now unionized. This is a good thing. So, to support this event, consider purchasing Pindar wines to celebrate workers who now have the benefit of union coverage and support. Pindar, at this time, is the only L.I. winery that has workers who are unionized.

At Starbucks:
There are four Starbuck stores on Long Island actively working to unionize and the Great Neck and Massapequa workers are currently voting to join the union. Stores organizing are:
Westbury at 914 Old Country Road
Farmingville at 2280 N. Ocean Avenue
Massapequa at 4301 Merrick Road
If Starbucks is your thing, take action by visiting these stores and showing the workers your support. When you place an order, use the name "Union Yes". The solidarity on Long Island has been amazing to see and it makes a real impact on workers who are facing a brutal anti-union campaign from the company.
Volunteer Opportunity: Long Island Immigration Clinic
The Long Island Immigration Clinic was in the planning stage for about two years. It's purpose is to assist those folks who are seeking asylum in the United States. The Clinic became operational at the beginning of March of this year. The clinic operates from the campus of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood. The hope is to train about 100 more volunteers to assist in the effort to be of help to "friends". If you think this is something in which you would like to be involved, you may contact the Clinic at 631-966-4148. Both Sister Janet Kinney, C.S.J. and Dena Spanos will be able to help with any questions you may have.
