A monthly communique from Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of Virginia Wesleyan University
A New Academic Year Begins
Things are in full swing on campus as we begin our new academic year at Virginia Wesleyan University. Last month we held the annual State of the University, where I was pleased to share that VWU is growing and prospering despite external challenges in higher education and the world. Read more about our record fundraising, affordability efforts, growing enrollment, and innovative partnerships in our State of the University feature story. A link to the archived video is also included.
We were proud to officially announce the new partnership between VWU and the Virginia Beach Police Department. The program puts officers on an accelerated path to their bachelor’s degree, deepening their understanding of human behavior and advancing their abilities in resolving conflict. We're so pleased to partner with our City on another project that positively impacts the quality of life here.
For students looking to graduate in an accelerated and more affordable time frame, VWU is now offering three-year degree pathways for 27 bachelor's programs. These pathways provide students with the framework, if they choose, to complete their degree requirements for their chosen majors and minors in just three years. These pathways are one of the many measures adopted by the University to keep a Virginia Wesleyan education affordable.
The Batten Honors College welcomed its newest class of scholars to campus with the traditional Matriculation Ceremony. I'm proud to share that the endowment for this program has grown to $80.3 million and is invested in an environmentally friendly portfolio supporting the adoption of long-term investment strategies that create an equitable, low-carbon, and regenerative economy. The charitable arm of our investment firm, Brown Advisory, has also made a contribution to establish a student-managed investment fund at VWU.
Finally, I hope you will join us next Thursday, September 8, as we celebrate our special tradition of Founders Day. The formal convocation ceremony and presentation of our annual Alumni Awards will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center. For those unable to join in person, we hope you will watch live on the VWU Digital Broadcasting Network. We look forward to once again paying tribute to our roots, recognizing key individuals who helped shape our history, and celebrating the institution's bright future.
