Field Notes...
From Sam Filler, Executive Director
Dear Friends,
Spring greetings from Washington D.C.!

I am in our nation’s capital this week participating in WineAmerica’s National Wine Policy Conference . The conference provides an opportunity for all the US wine regions to gather and discuss national issues affecting the industry. At the conference, we plan to explore topics such as the new excise tax system, ADA website compliance, and other key issues like music licensing, immigration reform, and trade policy. The conference also includes visits with our New York Congressional Delegation to help keep them informed on issues of importance to our industry.

This spring marks a new chapter at the Foundation. We will be relocating from the New York Kitchen to a new office at Keuka Business Park in Penn Yan. It was an honor to serve as a founding partner for New York Kitchen. We have been proud to support the mission of promoting New York food and beverages as a tenant for 13 years. As the Foundation continues to evolve, we have made the decision to relocate our office to better accommodate a growing staff and offer more educational programming. As of May 1st, 2019, our address and phone number will change, as shown below:

Looking forward to the summer, I am pleased to announce that the NY Wine Classic is officially scheduled for Aug. 5-7 th , 2019, at the scenic Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel . The Wine Classic is one of my favorite events because it serves as our annual celebration of the best wines from New York. We recruited a stellar line up of judges from around the globe with diverse backgrounds of wine related expertise and credentials. This year’s judges include notable industry experts like Jamie Goode , and Master of Wine Alumnae: Doug Frost , Bree Boskov, and Mary Gorman-McAdams . And, we are excited to announce, Lorraine Hems will serve as our first ever Head Judge to help assist all our judges in executing a thorough evaluation of New York wines.

Stay tuned for more exciting industry reports this spring from the Foundation's Export Program as we continue to ramp up our international marketing activities in Canada, Hong Kong, London, and France through the end of May. We will also be announcing the start of our NY Drinks NY ninth program year.
Cheers,
Sam Filler, Executive Director

A Note About the Press Deck Newsletter Content...
To all our valued members, wine enthusiasts, trade, media, and wine community:

We appreciate your loyalty and want to share with you the thinking behind how we compile the Press Deck newsletter. Every week we assemble six to eight articles that we feel will appeal to our large audience of industry, consumer members, and wine enthusiasts. We do our best to find quality pieces on topics that highlight the positive work being done by so many of you to advance our community. The Foundation has long shared that diversity is a strength of New York State, and we try to share many featured articles and, more recently, ‘Field Notes’ written by Guest Member authors. Please note that the opinions expressed in these articles do not reflect an endorsement or statement by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. Our purpose is to act as an information conduit, a community connector, to give voice to unique perspectives, and to highlight varying regions, accolades, and general news from around our great state. As always, we welcome your feedback on our choices, and also welcome those of you who feel strongly to craft counterpoints, questions or overall sentiments to the opinions expressed by articles we share. Further, if you have topics of interest to share within our Field Notes, or articles that you feel would be beneficial for our readers to view, we welcome you to email them to us for review and consideration.

Thank you,
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation

A Small Taste of Finger Lakes in the Big City
In 2013 Ollie Sakhno opened the wine bar Keuka Kafe. Not as you might expect here in the Finger Lakes, home to Keuka Lake, but in Forest Hills in the New York City borough of Queens. On average, Keuka Kafe has about 10 to 12 Finger Lakes wines in stock at any given time in addition to others from around the world. Among the eight now featured “almost spring” wines on the Kafe’s Facebook page are Forge Winery’s Dry Riesling and a Pinot Noir Brut Rose by Goose Watch Winery.  Read more...
What About Winegrowing In Hudson Valley, New York?
The Hudson Valley, expanding upward after a 45-minute drive north out of Manhattan, became the United States’ first wine region when, lore says, French Huguenot settlers planted grapevines more than 300 years ago in what is now Ulster County. In 1982, the zone earned itself an AVA: the Hudson River Region , today rich in quality hybrids and suitable vinifera.   Read more...
