Dear Prestonwood Montessori at E.D. Walker Families,

Our campus and community are bursting with life, learning, and joy. Our children are now the ones greeting us first in the morning, asking how we and each other are doing, and seamlessly transitioning to class, lunch, and dismissal. We have student leaders taking over the announcements, shining in athletics, and building bridges to make new friends.

There is so much to look forward to this fall. Be sure to read the full newsletter so you don't miss out on any of the fun and learning!

Sincerely,

Ashley Toole (Principal)

Fabiola Martinez (Assistant Principal)

Show up! Attendance Matters.

We are having so much fun celebrating Attendance Awareness Month during September to promote strong, consistent attendance habits that will set students up for success.

Our attendance goal is 98% in order to earn Distinctions from the state and set our students up for success every day! Currently, we are averaging 95% daily attendance. That may not seem like a big gap, but when looking at attendance, even 1% away is a BIG number - let's Level Up and Show Up!

Did you know?

Students are more likely to be involved in class, be successful, and stay on track for graduation if they miss fewer than 10 school days.

Montessori Material

Geometric Solids

The Geometric Solids are used at every age. Each year the child Children builds and expands upon their knowledge of Geometric principles.

In the Primary Classroom, children are introduced to solids as a sensorial experience. They use their sense of touch and sight to explore the properties of the different solids. They explore the round edges of a sphere by rolling it across their work mat. They feel the edges and corners of a rectangular prism.

In Lower Elementary, the children learn the nomenclature of the solids, the properties of 3D figures, and sort figures based on their properties. Then using their knowledge, they classify real life objects.

In Upper Elementary, children use multiple Geometric solids to construct. They discover how two or more figures work together to create a different shape.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIMARY GUIDES

It has been five amazing weeks of school so far! In Primary, we focus on creating class communities. While also enhancing our sensorial and practical life skills.

One of the first things we learn is that our classroom is a community and we work together to learn. Community building starts with building relationships through grace and courtesy lessons. For example, greeting a person and addressing a person by name.

In addition to being kind to one another, we work together to take care of our environment (classroom) by exploring practical life. In practical life we learn how to pour beans and water. At breakfast and lunch, prepare a table for a meal and use utensils and open containers. Then, we wash dishes, tables and chairs to reset the learning environment.

Our students are diving into content work, starting with Senorial -- the gateway to science. This work refines the senses to discriminate between sizes, colors, shapes, textures, sounds, and smells! Additionally, many of our primary children have begun spelling, writing, and math operations.

Students participated in their first academic measurements of the year. Pre-Kindergarten children took the CIRCLE measurement and Kindergarten took TX-KEA. These beginning of the year assessments provided a baseline. And, provides guides with an understanding of what we need to do to help our children continue to grow and excel.

The Primary guides are enthralled with our childrens’ excitement and determination each day to learn! We can’t wait to see what all they accomplish this year!

MESSAGE FROM THE LOWER ELEMENTARY GUIDES

Dear Lower Elementary (1st, 2nd and 3rd grade) Families,

Wow! We cannot believe we are already at the end of the second month of school. In Lower Elementary, we began discovery of our different content areas with The Five Great Lessons.

While the second and third graders have heard these Great Lessons before, they are still enamored and love listening and watching with bated breath.

We took our first MAP assessment this month. They are a baseline assessment to see where our children are and what we need to do to grow and reach their goals.

As guides, we are so proud of their confidence, hard work, and focus during these tests. Please continue reading with or having your child read nightly and check ClassDojo Memories for pictures and progress updates!
