THE PRIORY POST ~ November 2, 2023
The Priory’s mission is to nurture each child’s inherent curiosity, develop an enthusiasm for learning and encourage intellectual and creative initiative, preparing the child to be a responsible, tolerant and self-confident global citizen.
Dear Priory Families,
I am saddened to share the news of Ms. McConnon's passing, a cherished member of our school's history. For those who may not have had the privilege of meeting her, Ms. McConnon dedicated 26 years to serving as our school Principal from 1969 to 1995, and even before that, she touched the lives of Priory students as a second, third and fourth-grade teacher.
Ms. McConnon’s teachings went far beyond academics. She believed that school should be a place where life-long friendships are formed, where hands-on learning is embraced, and where kindness is practiced every single day. Her educational philosophy, deeply influenced by Ms. Ballantyne, our co-founder, revolved around the principle of “learning by doing,” leaving a lasting legacy on our school’s approach to education.
Even in her retirement, Ms. McConnon’s bond with her Priory family remained strong. She visited often, making a point to join us for Christmas concerts, special events and celebrations, always eager to reconnect with the Priory community she loved so dearly.
To express our appreciation for Ms. McConnon, our faculty and students made it a tradition to visit her regularly at the Vista Seniors' Residence. During these heartfelt visits, we sang and played band instruments, celebrating with her on Mother's Day and Christmas, and on one particularly memorable Halloween, we also enjoyed a trick-or-treating visit.
As we remember and celebrate Ms. McConnon’s remarkable life and legacy, let us hold dearly her wise words close to our hearts: “Every day is a gift. Use it well. Develop your talents, and try to do one kind deed each day for a parent, friend, or neighbour.”

A Spook-tacular Event
On October 31, our Priory Parents' Association outdid themselves with a spectacular Halloween Celebration! Dressed in their creative attire, the children enjoyed a fun-packed afternoon that included a costume parade, haunted game stations, creepy sensory exploration areas, and an exhilarating walk through the spine-chilling haunted library.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible dedication of our two lovely PPA Co-Chairs, Lonneke Bank and Rosanna Rizzuto, and their team of fifty parent volunteers, our cherished "fun-makers," who worked tirelessly to ensure a joyous celebration for all the children. Your commitment, energy, and love for our Priory community were evident in every detail of the event, creating a truly unforgettable experience for our students. Thank you PPA!

Remembrance Day Commemorative Assembly
On Thursday, November 9, at 8:30 a.m. The Priory School will be holding its annual Remembrance Day special commemorative assembly, where we will acknowledge the courage of those who have served our country during times of war, conflict, and peace. This year marks our twenty-third year of observing this memorial day at The Priory and taking an active part in Remembrance learning, and reflection. Poppies received from our local branch of the Canadian Legion will be made available to all children to wear. Parents are cordially invited to join us for this special assembly as we remember the important contributions of our brave veterans.

A Message from Student Council
The Priory’s Student Council is collecting winter clothes for the “Foyer du Monde” organization to support refugees. They are in need of jackets, hats, gloves, boots, snow pants, ear muffs, and scarves. If you have any gently used winter clothes or accessories that you no longer need, please help out by sending them to school. We will be collecting donations in the grade 6 classroom until the end of November. Thanks so much for helping us to make a difference!

Light Up the Tree of Lights
We’re thrilled to share a special initiative The Priory is participating in to support Sainte-Justine Hospital this holiday season. Along with various schools across Quebec, we aim to light up the Tree of Lights, sending support to the young patients and their families at the hospital.
We are also incredibly proud to announce that one of our sixth-grade students, Ethan, has taken on the role of an ambassador for this campaign, showcasing the incredible spirit of our community.
Thank you for joining us in this meaningful cause by clicking on the following link.

Discovering Murals
On Thursday, October 26, as part of a guided tour, Grade 4 students had the pleasure of discovering some of Montreal's fascinating artistic murals. As students wandered through the city’s streets, they were captivated by the stunning artwork, each mural telling its own unique story. This discovery will serve as a pretext for an interesting writing project in both English and French. What an adventure!

A Visit to the Museum
The Grade 6 students enjoyed a delightful visit to the Museum of Fine Arts last Thursday morning, where they learned about and explored various types of artists. These included artists who like discovering and exploring with subjects and materials, those with a message to convey, and those focused on the aesthetic and appearance of their artwork. Accompanied by a guide, the students toured different exhibits throughout the museum and participated in a workshop where they had the opportunity to create their own glow-in-the-dark intuitive artwork using oil pastels and ink.

Stay Warm
As we transition into colder temperatures, we ask parents to ensure that children come to school dressed for the chillier weather. Winter jackets, splash pants, two sets of gloves, hats, and boots provide much-needed protection from the elements and allow children to stay warm and dry during our three outdoor recesses.
