THE PRIORY POST ~ Thursday, January 25, 2024

The Priory’s mission is to nurture each child’s inherent curiosity, develop an enthusiasm for learning and encourage intellectual and creative initiative, preparing the child to be a responsible, tolerant and self-confident global citizen.

Dear Priory Families,

As you are all aware, at The Priory, we are committed to nurturing a culture of continuous growth and learning. One of the ways we uphold this dedication is by placing a strong emphasis on evidence-based practices and professional development. Our investment in our faculty directly influences the quality of education we provide to our children. This week and next, our Cycle One educators, Ms. Zainab, Ms. Zarina, and Ms. Victoria, are participating in training and certification through the Reading and Learning Clinic of Manitoba. This program is tailored to equip them with a deep understanding of the concepts related to our UFli literacy program and phonics curriculum in Grades 1 and 2.

As our Cycle One educators participate in these training sessions and benefit from Ms. Eley's expertise in early literacy, this ongoing collaboration emphasizes our dedication to delivering excellence in education to our children. We are fortunate to have Ms. Eley, our Learning Specialist, who earned the Orton Gillingham Classroom Educator and Associate-level certification five years ago. Ms. Eley not only oversees the individualized reading program at The Priory, but also plays an essential role in guiding pedagogical practices for teaching literacy during our students' foundational years. She currently serves as a valued member of the Board of Directors of Teachers for Reading Canada (TFRC), an organization dedicated to providing this training to educators across Canada.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE PRIORY

Student-Led Conferences

On Thursday, February 29 and Friday, March 1, you will have the opportunity to visit the school with your child to review their portfolio with the teaching team. Student-led conferences are an important part of the learning process as they encourage self-reflection and growth. During their conference, your child will serve as your guide, sharing areas of strengths and challenges encountered in the classroom.

Unlike the fall, this term’s format will be in-person. Two or three families will simultaneously attend a twenty-minute session, with the teaching team present to facilitate and coach students as they walk you through their portfolios. Students are therefore expected to accompany their parents during the student-led conference.

Scheduling Conferences

Student-led conferences can be scheduled online using the Dash system. This online scheduling system allows parents to select a date and time that works best for their schedule. Parents can schedule conferences online with their child's teaching team on a first-come, first-served basis. The DASH portal will be open for scheduling from Thursday, February 22, at 12:00 p.m. to Monday, February 26, at 12:00 p.m.

Important Notice: Please note that due to student-led conferences, there will be no extracurricular activities on Thursday, February 29, and no Ped Day daycare services on Friday, March 1. However, the After School Program will operate normally on Thursday, February 29, from 3:45 to 6:00 p.m.

Junior Winter Carnival

Our annual Junior Winter Carnival is a time for friends, festivities, and good old-fashioned fun! On Wednesday, January 31st, through Friday, February 2nd, children in Kindergarten through third grade will be grouped into five Arctic animal teams and engage in outdoor and indoor activities. Let the Priory junior winter games begin!

Senior Winter Carnival

Students from Grades 4, 5, and 6 will be celebrating winter during our annual Senior Winter Carnival on Thursday February 1st and Friday, February 2nd. On Thursday morning, students will venture over to Murray Hill Park for some fun on the sledding hill. Students are asked to bring their own sleds for this activity. On Friday afternoon, we will enjoy watching a movie and snacking on popcorn.

Skating Program at The Priory

Get ready to lace up your skates and join us for a wonderful winter pastime! The Priory's beloved tradition of ice skating, dating back to the 1950s, is just around the corner, and we couldn't be more excited.

Parent Volunteers Needed

A group of dedicated Grade 4 parents have graciously volunteered their time to build our skating rink in our backyard, beginning on Monday, January 29th, when weather conditions are favourable. We are extending the invitation to all parents who would like to lend a helping hand. Kindly sign up below, and join us on Monday at 3:30 p.m., and please bring a shovel.

Equipment Needs

Our skating program is voluntary (not mandatory) but participation is highly encouraged. If your child is interested in participating in our skating program during recess times, they will require the following equipment, all of which must be clearly labelled with their name:

  1. Ice skates
  2. Hockey helmet with a full-face cage
  3. Thin tuque or hat to wear under their helmet

Once our skating program begins, we will welcome parent volunteers to help with tying skates, support our beginner skaters, and take part in our skating program. Please bring along your skates and enjoy a fun time skating with your child's class!

Please stay tuned for more details including our skating schedule. We can't wait to see you all out on the ice soon!
