THE PRIORY POST ~ Thursday, October 8, 2020

The Priory’s mission is to nurture each child’s inherent curiosity, develop an enthusiasm for learning and encourage intellectual and creative initiative preparing the child to be a responsible, tolerant and self-confident global citizen.

Dear Priory Families,

I have to admit that the Thanksgiving Weekend is one of my favourite holidays. The food is delicious, fall colours are at their peak, and everyone loves a long weekend. My top reason, though, for cherishing the Thanksgiving holidays is because it encourages me to reflect and express gratitude.

Heading into the long weekend, it gives me pleasure to express my gratitude first to you, our Priory Parents. Thank you for trusting The Priory School to keep your children safe. Thank you for helping to guide your children through new routines, making sure they come to school prepared with masks, water bottles and an optimistic spirit. Thank you for agreeing to new safety protocols, which, unfortunately, keep you away from assemblies, committee meetings and friendly chats, but which keep our students healthy (we miss you!). Thank you for your many words of encouragement and support over the past six weeks –Your positive confidence in us is the turkey stuffing that nourishes our teachers and staff. Finally, thank you for being with us during this unpredictable, challenging, and yes, amazing school year!

We’ve all worked hard to get to this six-week mark. On behalf of the faculty and staff of The Priory School, we wish you the very best weekend filled with family connections, good food, rest, and new and cherished memories.

With gratitude,
Early Dismissal (Friday, October 9): As scheduled on our school calendar, tomorrow, there will be an early dismissal. Students in all grades will be having their lunch break at 11:30 a.m. to be ready for dismissal by noon. We ask that you please pick up or arrange to have your child picked up between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. There will be no after-school care provided in the afternoon.
Mid-Term Progress Reports: Your child’s mid-term progress report will be available digitally on Wednesday, October 14, starting at 3:00 p.m. Parents can access progress reports through the Dash Portal located on our Priory Website at https://www.priory.qc.ca. If you have a Dash account from previous years, you may login using the same login information. Dash login information will be sent to our Priory families next week.
No Parking: Our neighbours at Congrégation du Saint-Esprit have requested that our Priory families please pay special attention to the No Parking signs in front of their property. Congrégation du Saint-Esprit ask that the space in front of their garage doors remain clear. We have been informed that authorities will be called if cars are parked illegally. Thank you for helping us be outstanding neighbours.
Foundation Corner: Did You Know?

Did you know that The Priory School has solar panels installed on the roof of the gymnasium?
During the 2016-2017 school year, The Priory School Foundation launched an Annual Campaign to raise funds to purchase and install solar panels onto the roof of the Paré-Howlett Hall. The best aspect of this project is that the idea came from the students themselves. The previous year's Grade 5 Class had engaged in a year-long study of environment-saving strategies for The Priory. The students interviewed representatives from local solar power companies and collected data to strengthen their case. During the final term of school the Grade 5 Class presented their proposal directly to The Priory School Board of Directors, who were so impressed with the presentation they agreed to take it on!

Our Priory Community will be happy to learn that our solar panels are going strong and have been collecting power from the sun since 2017. The power generated from the solar panels helps to offset the total electricity bill of The Priory School, but it also has many environmental benefits.

Since the Priory solar panels were installed, they have captured a total of 17.37 MWH of energy, and 12 tons of carbon dioxide has been offset. This means that, each year, The Priory School is avoiding CO2 emissions equal to 304 trees or 19,230 litres of fuel!

Thank you Priory Community for supporting our school, our students and Planet Earth.
A Homecoming Message to our Grade 6 Parents:

October brings with it the honoured tradition of Homecoming, our newest alumni's first reunion. An important element of this celebration is the helpful and interesting "High School Q&A" between our most recent graduates and our current Grade 6 students.

Though this Homecoming will be a virtual one for the Class of 2020, we ask that our Grade 6 students be permitted to stay later at school on Thursday, October 22, so that they can participate as a full class for the Q&A Zoom session. Pick-up time for our Grade 6 students will be 4:45 p.m. Thank you!
Autumn is here! Weather permitting, our Priory students enjoy the outdoors everyday, during morning and afternoon recess, lunch recess, Physical Education and After School. On cooler days, please send your child to school with warm clothing (jacket, hat and gloves).
** REMINDER ** Parent Information & School Directory: In last week's Newsletter we asked our community to please take a few moments to fill out a questionnaire, which also serves as an important contact/data verification for the office and teachers. Thank you to the parents who took the time to do so.

If you have not yet submitted, we ask that you please submit your questionnaire online by tomorrow, Friday, October 9, so that we may verify your existing information in order to share our School Directory with the Priory community in the coming week and to pass along the correct contact information to your child's Class Parents and the PPA for school events.

Thank you for your cooperation.
A Message from The Priory's Admissions Team:

It's a busy and exciting time for Admissions, as we prepare to host our very first Virtual Open House Series, and accept applications for the 2021-22 academic year. Families will have the opportunity to meet and speak with current students, faculty members and Priory parents.

Our current Priory families are invited to contact the Priory's Admissions Team ([email protected]) to inform us of siblings who may be planning to join The Priory School next fall. Please contact Admissions for more information.
Potter Boutique: The Potter Boutique is operated exclusively by our amazing Priory Parents, who provide uniform services throughout the school year. It has been a busy start to the school year, and your patience is much appreciated as we sort through the new orders and exchanges.

To ensure the safety of our PPA volunteers, items returned for exchange are placed in a basket and processed after approximately 10 days. Refunds are processed, and new items are then processed with a new transaction. As such, please be sure to include a new ordering form with payment information.

Thank you for your support.
A special message from The Priory's School and Family Counselor

Randy Brandman Farber, our school counselor, will be on-site Wednesdays. If your child is having challenges at home or school, or if you just need some professional advice, we invite you to contact Randy at [email protected]. She will be working collaboratively with Priory staff, teachers and students, to support them in our school community. In addition, she will be visiting classes to explore topics such as friendships, coping skills, self esteem building tools and more. Randy will also be hosting parent meetings. Stay tuned for more information soon!
Absence and Sick Day Reminder: Should your child need to miss school due to an appointment or illness, please inform your child's homeroom Teacher and French Specialist directly by email via our Contact Us web page (https://www.priory.qc.ca/contact-us)
Tuition Reminder: A gentle reminder that the first tuition installment is now overdue. If you have not already done so, please remit your first and second installment cheques as soon as possible. Thank you very much.
EducAction Virtual Workshops: Although our usual animation organizers cannot physically be at school with our students, they would like to offer parents the possibility of registering their children for virtual workshops at home for sessions of 6 to 8 weeks. Parents have a week from today to register online, plus some parents may still have online credit that can be used for this purpose.
