Climbing to Instructor

James "JT" Jacobs, a 2016 power line graduate, now serves as an instructor for the Virginia Maryland Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC).

"When I was growing up, my career aspirations were always outside the realm of everyday jobs. I remember wanting to be a professional athlete, a fighter jet pilot, even a monster truck driver.”

After high school graduation, he began the traditional college journey. He tried several majors. He sampled programs at two different schools. Nothing felt like a good fit.

SVCC Welcomes Back In-Person Graduation

Dr. Christopher Parker to Speak

The College will hold an in-person commencement ceremony Saturday, May 14th, on the Christanna Campus in Alberta. SVCC will welcome former dual enrollment student and Halifax County native, Dr. Christopher J. Parker, as the guest speaker.

The outdoor ceremony will begin at 9:30 AM, adjacent to the new Student Services Center. Graduates and their families are invited to attend. Tickets will not be required.

"I am very excited to finally attend my first in-person commencement since becoming the president of Southside Virginia Community College," said Dr. Quentin R. Johnson. "The pandemic has limited us to virtual ceremonies for the last couple of years, so being able to celebrate the accomplishments of our students in-person will be a special experience."
