The Public Health Threat of Health Misinformation

Should Social Media Use be a Health Vital Sign?

Last Thursday the Surgeon General of the United States, Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A. Vice Admiral, released a new, and unusual:

Health Advisory on Confronting Health Misinformation

Dr. Murthy's recommendations for Health Practitioners includes:

  • Proactively engaging with patients and the public on health misinformation. "Doctors, nurses, and other clinicians are highly trusted and can be effective in addressing health misinformation. If you are a clinician, take the time to understand each patient’s knowledge, beliefs, and values".

  • Listening. "Listen with empathy, and when possible, correct misinformation in personalized ways".

  • Using language that is accessible to all patients. "Consider using less technical language when addressing health concerns".

  • Promoting Health Literacy. "Find opportunities to promote patient Health Literacy on a regular basis".

Sounds a lot like Motivational Interviewing doesn't it?

Home Visitors and CPSP Staff are Highly Trusted Healthcare Practitioners who regularly use Motivational Interviewing with clients

while providing health education.

Why not use these skills to assess Health Literacy and address Social Media Health Misinformation?
