All Hands on Deck: Gearing Up for Summer 2025

As the winter cold seeps into Boston, summer isn’t far from the minds of the Career Services and Employer Engagement teams at the Boston Private Industry Council. It’s not because of a wish for warmer weather – although that may be true for some – but because the teams are busy preparing students and employer partners alike for the 2025 summer jobs season. While summer is months away, so much work goes on behind the scenes to make a successful experience fall into place.

Between February boot camps, guiding students through the summer jobs application process, and connecting with existing and future employers, it’s truly all hands on deck here at the PIC. Read our newest blog to learn more about how we are preparing for Summer 2025.

STEM Starts Now: Celebrating STEM Week 2024

Every October, MA STEM Week, sponsored by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, is held statewide by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council to encourage the exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The theme for 2024, STEM Starts Now, focused on STEM learning for all age groups.

The PIC team fully embraced STEM week, engaging students and employers in activities and events throughout the city. Highlights included: a student tour of a working construction site led by Suffolk Construction, reconnecting with a Tech Apprentice alum at SIM Boston Technology Leadership Summit, and a virtual reality career exploration activity at the Citywide College, Career, and STEM Fair.

Healthcare Careers Consortium December Meeting

The Healthcare Careers Consortium met in-person in December at Massachusetts Bay Community College’s new Center for Health Sciences, Early Childhood, and Human Services facility in Framingham. The meeting touched upon many timely topics, including an update on the Good Jobs Challenge, data on the state of nursing in MA, the assistance of employees impacted by the Steward Healthcare hospital closures, and the new Healthcare Aide Career Pathway being developed by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

The discussion concluded with a tribute to longtime HCC Co-Chair MJ Ryan, who is retiring from Mass General Brigham in February. Thank you, MJ, for your service and partnership, and best wishes for your next chapter!

OECD Conference

In October, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Conference (OECD) came to Boston, gathering network members, funders, and key partners to exchange knowledge and policy strategies. Participants came from far and wide to engage in the conference, hailing from Stockholm, Madrid, Cork, Manchester, Glasgow, Milan, Paris, Dublin, Berlin, San Diego and London. Supported by JPMorganChase, the City of Boston's Worker Empowerment Cabinet and the Boston PIC worked with OECD to organize a packed schedule around the theme “Harnessing green skills for inclusion: the role of cities.”

Thank you to our cohosts and the companies and organizations who shared their spaces during this insightful conference. A special thank you to all who traveled to Boston – we hope you enjoyed your visit and returned home with new ideas to share.
