March 15th-21st, 2026 is National Poison Prevention Week. The Alabama Poison Information Center (APIC) at Children's of Alabama has been providing a free, confidential resource that is available 24/7 to the public and healthcare providers since 1958. 1 Alabamians of all ages can receive treatment recommendations for exposure to some of the most common poisons including alcohol and drugs, household products, chemicals, fumes, insect stings, snake bites, and toxic plants or fungi. 1
Children's of Alabama staffs the APIC hotline with highly qualified medical personnel trained in toxicology that are able to advise callers about appropriate treatment and provide follow up to exposures, as needed.3
This service allows patients that might otherwise have had to seek medical care utilizing emergency services, to be safely monitored from their own home. 2
The APIC has provided a helpful intake form that school nurses can utilize to take down the essential information APIC needs to begin monitoring and provide appropriate advice and follow up for exposures. The QR code for this form is listed below.
