November 2025

Vol. 4, Issue 9

This time of year brings us to consider the things that we are most grateful for. For the team at Children's of Alabama's Health Education and Safety Center, that includes our partnership with health room nurses across the state! Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday and don't forget to carve out some time for self care and rest. We appreciate the efforts you give every day to keep students safe and healthy!

The Monthly Spotlight

Child Safety

November is National Child Safety and Protection month. More children die each year from injuries than from all contagious diseases combined! Compared to the general population, Children are 4 times more likely to have a death from an injury. For every child that dies from an injury, 45 injured children are hospitalized and 1,300 more will require treatment in an emergency department.1 The good news is we can take action to educate children and their families to prevent Injuries from the most common causes:

Firearm injuries, motor vehicle mishap, choking, burns, falls, drowning and poisoning1, 2.

Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children.2 Children are naturally curious and are very likely to handle a gun when they find one. Safely securing guns with a cable lock and/or gun safe and also storing guns and ammunition in separate places is best practice2.

Motor vehicle safety is also vitally important to protecting children. Choosing appropriate car seats for growing children and buckling up every ride prevent injuries in the event of a motor vehicle crash3.

Appropriate precautions both at home and at school can also help prevent injuries from falls, choking, poisoning drowning and burns. Ensuring adequate supervision and appropriate safety practices around children can make an impact4. Actions as simple as covering hot drinks with a lid to prevent spilling, keeping medications in lockboxes, securing cleaning products and keeping choking hazards out of reach of children can go a long way in injury prevention4.

Guide to Managing Holiday Sensory Overload

The holiday season can be a busy time for families. With holiday gatherings, parties, and numerous festivities, it can be nonstop. All the hustle and bustle can also be challenging for children who have sensory processing disorder. Kelsey Granthum, an occupational therapist at Children’s of Alabama, says sensory processing disorder deals with how our brain and body perceive different stimuli in the environment. Children with sensory processing issues may react differently to various types of sensory input.

Welcome to the team!

This month brings a new face to the staff at Children's of Alabama's Health Education and Safety Center. Allow us to introduce Beth Pettipiece, BSN, RN, CPN as our new School Nurse Outreach Coordinator. Beth brings over 24 years of pediatric nursing experience to this position. Most recently, Beth had the honor of serving students at a school for children with special needs in Shelby County. When not at work, Beth enjoys teaching and participating in REFIT fitness classes. She is also a proud band mom with both Chelsea High and Middle school bands. We are looking forward to continuing to grow this program to meet the educational needs of School Nurses across the state.
