The Monthly Spotlight

National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Human trafficking is a very real danger to school age children in the state of Alabama. This inhumane crime has spread to communities both large and small across our state. 1 The average entrance age of trafficking victims is only 11-14 years old. 2 It is very concerning that there are more slaves today than at any other time in history.2 School nurses are in a unique position to potentially recognize and report possible cases of child trafficking. 2, 1 Familiarity that comes from almost daily contact with students can help health room nurses be able to notice changes in attendance, unusual behaviors and physical symptoms of abuse that trafficking victims may show.3 To learn more, check out Children's of Alabama previous School Nurse Workshop on Child Trafficking as shown above.
