The Monthly Spotlight

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Children's Hospital Intervention and Prevention Services Center (CHIPS) have been providing resources that include forensic medical exams, counseling, support services and prevention education to families impacted by suspected abuse since 1995.² As professionals that bridge education and health, school nurses have a vital role in collaborating with other education professionals to help prevent child mistreatment.¹ Daily interactions with students enables school nurses to recognize subtle changes that may indicate children have experienced various forms of abuse^.¹ The ability to create a safe space for students to find a trusted adult to turn to is also a precious resource for children experiencing trauma.³
