The Monthly Spotlight

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and promoting disaster planning. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), preparedness starts at home. 1 It's important to know the risks associated with where you live. Next, ensure your family is prepared by making a family emergency plan - this can help reduce stress during an emergency situation. 1 Having a disaster preparedness kit ready can help prevent scrambling during an emergency. A few helpful items to have ready in a disaster preparedness kit can include a helmet, shoes, and a flashlight.2 Finally, it's important to talk to your children about being prepared for an emergency. Discuss your family's emergency plan to make sure everyone knows what to do when an emergency strikes.
