My what a busy winter it was, we can hardly believe it is already over. With Spring comes more change to Q Center. Our team continues to grow as we welcome new board members and staff. Next month we'll introduce you to our Board Chair Shane Devins. Rest assured our board is working diligently on governance, oversight, and fundraising, and has recently adopted a Smokefree Policy for our Center that will be effective May 1. You can read more about the new policy here.

Beloved, long-time staff Susan Kocen has bid farewell to our seniors and the Encouraging Respect for Elders program she developed almost seven years ago, though we expect to still see Susan visiting Q for future programs. Stay tuned for the updates as our Senior Programs continue to evolve and grow.
Q Center is Growing!

We are thrilled to welcome Janet Martinez (she/her) as our new Senior Community Coordinator. Janet (she/her) has an extensive background in social services, such as AIDS Project Los Angeles and the Portland Hollywood Senior Center. With a master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies (Gerontology) from Marylhurst University, Janet has spent years in scholarly research investigating the diversity of the longevity market including LGBTQ+ senior populations. She also has over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry producing reality programming, series, and feature-length movies in both the United States and abroad. Reach out to Janet via email!
We are equally excited to welcome Nicky Nicholson-Klingerman as our newest staff member at Q. Nicky (she/her) studied journalism at Northwestern University. She is an experienced freelance writer with a demonstrated history of working in the construction industry, most recently as an assistant project manager. She is also skilled in Customer Relationship Management (CRM), operation systems management, media and communication relations. When she is not making waves in the construction industry, she’s either performing or turning princesses into princes with her words. Nicky is looking for a crew of volunteers to help with facility maintenance. Interested? Please email for more details.
Meet a Q Volunteer!
Our precious volunteers make most of the magic happen here at Q Center. Volunteers staff our reception desk during open hours, help out behind the scenes with cleaning, graphic design, event planning, and so much more.

Simrat Mann
Hi my name is Simrat Mann but some white people call me Simi. I'm 22 years old and am from Sacramento, California although I've been living in Portland, OR for 4 years now. I enjoy living with my partner, my two goofy cats, and my 12 fish!

I grew up on the Sikh pillar of "seva", or selfless service, as a guiding philosophy in how I choose to spend some of my time. And after a couple years of being in Portland, working odd jobs, and going to school, I realized that I wasn't feeling fulfilled. I eventually changed jobs and started working with youth in north Portland and then started volunteering at Q Center!

My experience these last 6 months with the center has been transformative. I've volunteered and interned as a front desk receptionist, a host of the QTBIPOC leadership collaborative, an outreach member from time to time, and as an assistant for orientation trainings. I've been able to expand and further develop my own skill sets while making connections with some amazing people.

Q and A with Simrat:
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: "My Favorite hobbies include dancing, binge-watching tv shows or watching movies, talking and learning more about equitable ways to interact with youth!"

Q:Who is your role model?
A: "My role models are anybody that fights for liberation through whatever equitable method they choose."

Q: This is a tough one... Pancakes or Waffles?
A: "I choose Waffles over pancakes."

Q: What is your favorite TV show or movie?
A: "My favorite tv show right now is The Magicians, but probably because I'm a libra, that definitely took me 20 minutes to decide on."
