A Message from our Board Chair
As we approach Pride Month 2019, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself as Q Center’s new Board Chair, and to thank all of Q Center’s amazing staff, supporters, volunteers, and donors. Without your hard work, we wouldn’t have accomplished all we did in 2018 and the first half of 2019, including our exponential fundraising growth, record attendance
at SHINE 2018, and the development and strengthening of Q Center’s programs.

My partner, Ryan, and I moved to Portland in 2017 and have truly been blown away by the open and welcoming nature of its LGBTQ2SIA+ community. We are excited to call Portland our new “home” and have quickly connected with so many amazing people we now get to call friends. We've become fast fans of the Blazers (post season!?!), Timbers and Thorns, and can't wait to attend the Thorns' Pride game next month.

Although I’m relatively new to Portland, I come to Q Center with several years of nonprofit board experience, and I hope to put that experience to good use in building on the 15+ years of history and community that the organization represents. As I look at Q Center’s history, I am inspired by the many individuals that have contributed and made Q Center what it is today. I am hopeful that we can continue that progress and seize on the abundance of opportunities I see in Q Center’s future.

I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve as Board Chair, and I look forward to working with each and every one of you. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, thoughts, or comments at shane@pdxcenter.org.

Yours,

Shane Devins
Q Center Board Chair

P.S. - I just signed up to be a monthly donor, and I hope you will too! Steady revenue from monthly donors is great for Q Center's sustainability. Even $5 a month makes a difference. Click here to learn more.

Updates from Q Staff and Programs:

Thanks to the advocacy of Q Center and myriad nonprofit partners, Portland United Against Hate (PUAH) was recently approved for $300,000 by the City, and an additional $75,000 specifically for civic dialogues, workshops and trainings.

Portland United Against Hate is a coalition of 65 community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, and the City of Portland's Office of Community & Civic Life. Our mission is to track, respond to, and prevent acts of hate while providing the support that our communities need.

We are extremely grateful to the city for the commitment of two years of funding which will help ensure we can continue to train and develop responses to hate crimes in our community.

Congratulations to our Program Coordinator Page Smith (pictured above), who is now co-chair of the PUAH work group! Page has put enormous effort into developing responsive trainings in 2019 that we will continue to use in 2020 and beyond, and countless hours into collaborating with our partners to build an effective and comprehensive response to hate. We are so proud of their work!

Join us at 6:30pm on June 6 for a free, PUAH-funded event, "What is a Hate Crime?" At this workshop, learn more about our work with Portland United Against Hate and learn real tools for how to assist community members who may have experienced a hate or bias incident. More details here!

Kathleen Perry

Kathleen Perry is a free-range librarian who has been with the Q Center for about 8 months. She divides her time at Q between the front desk and the Kendall Clawson Library. Her accomplishments include organizing a Drag Queen Story Hour, and bringing in her fellow book wizards to help organize the library.

Q and A with Kathleen:
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: Outside of the Q Center, she enjoys going to trivia nights with her friends; going to science talks with her partner; and watching documentaries with her cat.

Q:Who is your role model?
A: One of her heroes is Ryan O'Connell, the creator of the Netflix show 'Special', because of how he celebrates and explores many aspects of his identity.

Q: This is a tough one... Pancakes or Waffles?
A: One of her passions is actually pancakes over waffles, for the following reasons:
- Pancakes are softer and easier to eat. They can also be fluffy on the inside and crispy around the edges.
- Pancakes are denser and more filling than waffles. It’s difficult to go away hungry after eating a stack of pancakes.
- Think of the variations! Cinnamon roll pancakes, crepes, potato pancakes, okonomiyaki....She could go on.
- Have you tried constructing Mickey Mouse’s ears with a square waffle?

Q: What is your favorite TV show or movie?
A: She is passionate about 'Dr Who', a show about an anti-establishment intellectual who abhors violence and uses their wits to help the underdog. It's a show full of friendship and camaraderie; it is fun, magical, terrifying, exhilarating, and awe-inspiring.
