ST. BEDE'S BIDS FAREWELL to ONE of ITS OWN RIP KELLY ZULLO
O Sovereign Lord Christ, deliver your servant, Kelly Lorraine Zullo, from all evil, and set her free from every bond; that she may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
March 18, 1942 - April 5, 2024 Kelly Lorraine Zullo passed away on April 5, 2024, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 82. She was born on March 18, 1942, in Los Angeles to her late mother, Charlotte Woods. She met Ronnie Zullo, the love of her life, at Venice High School, and they had a child at an early age. Sadly, they had to give him away to a loving family for adoption. Two years later, still madly in love, they got married and raised a family of 4 boys and remained happily married for 64 years. Together, they made a beautiful home on Lucile Street for 56 years, where Ronnie still resides. Many years later as fate would have it, Mark Rawson, their first child came back into their lives through a mutual friend, discovering they were always so near and has been a huge part of the family adding another beautiful granddaughter, Sophie, for them to love. Kelly had a full & beautiful life.
Kelly was a loving and warm individual who cherished her family. She is survived by her loving husband Ronnie, her children Bobby, Tommy, Mike, and Mark, and her first child Mark Rawson, her wonderful grandchildren, Kirstin, Kollin, Kasey, Crystal, Justin, and Sophie as well as her beautiful great-grandchildren Axel, Lyla, and Alexandra. She is also survived by her brother Tom & sister-in-law Shirley. Her daughter's and son's in-law were always a big part of her life; Samantha, Nancie, Lisa, Janet, Easú, Juan, and Beto, who was always there for her at home to help with things around the house, especially the rice that he would cook for her. She was known for her friendly nature and was a mother and friend to everyone she met.
In her career, Kelly worked as a bookkeeper at La Marina Restaurant in Playa del Rey and at Harley-Davidson West in Venice. In her free time, she enjoyed various hobbies such as crochet, silverwork, stained-glass, and sewing. Kelly had a passion for outdoor activities such as hiking, exploring, riding horses, and gardening. She especially loved camping with her family and motor-homing across the states with Ronnie.
A viewing to honor and remember her wonderful life will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, located at 5835 W. Slauson Avenue, Culver City, CA on Friday, May 3rd from 2pm till 6 pm. Services will be held the next day at the chapel on Saturday May, 4, 2024 at 9 am. All are welcome.
Kelly's kind and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace. We love you dearly!!

Rea Crane has graciously and faithfully served as Head Sacristan of St. Bede’s for the past decade. That’s right, DECADE! The Head Sacristan is head of the Altar Guild, a special group charged with the awesome responsibility and privilege of tending to the beauty, peace and tranquility of worship. Rea has reliably led the Altar Guild with knowledge, creativity and artistic talent, while maintaining an atmosphere of devout yet joyous service. Rea, we are so grateful for your selfless service, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
The Head Sacristan works closely with the Rector and is responsible for the recruitment, training, development, scheduling and supervision of Altar Guild members, in addition to managing the inventory of supplies, including homemade Communion bread. As one who guides the appropriate changes of the worship environment depending on the church season, the Head Sacristan is tasked with assuring the Altar Guild executes the proper preparation of sacred vessels used in the Eucharist, dressing the altar, caring for linens, vestments, candles, flowers, and more.
As the one who has volunteered to take Rea’s place, I shadowed her during Holy Week and Easter and discovered how much effort this ministry can take. I pray for the support of all of you and invite others to join us, as many hands make light work. We are currently in need of an Altar Guild member to join Bond Harper in the monthly Eucharist set-up and clean-up. I also want to point out that the Altar Guild includes men as well as women!

Frank, Jerry and Karen in Central Park
Frank and Jerry at Trinity Church Wall Street
Parishioners Jerry Hornof (Senior Warden) and wife Karen Scharre were planning a trip to New York (after going to Texas to see the solar eclipse and before traveling to Morocco) and our Director of Music, Frank Basile, also happened to be going to New York. While at church they discovered they would all be there at the same time so they said to each other, “Let’s meet up!” On their first day together they hung out at Central Park. That evening Frank went to see a Broadway show (“Merrily We Roll Along”) while Jerry and Karen went to a Yankees game. The next day the group met at the 911 Memorial and also visited the historical Episcopal parish of Trinity Church Wall Street. That evening they all went to see a Broadway show (“Six”). On their third day together they went to see the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. All agreed that their time together was both meaningful and delightful. The next day Frank departed for New Haven where he joined a reunion with his college a cappella singer friends from the Yale Alleycats (who perform worldwide) and Karen and Jerry headed for Morocco, where they are still having a fabulous time.

Welcoming LGBTQ+ people is ‘more than flying the Pride flag,’ program group chair tells Diocesan Council
By Pat McCaughan
In the current climate, where some 484 anti-LGBTQ+ bills are proposed across the nation and local school boards are increasingly becoming culture war battlegrounds, the Program Group on LGBTQ+ Ministry – besides serving as a resource for the diocese and wider Episcopal church – aims to focus on advocacy, training and encouraging congregations to create safe spaces for community.
“Creating safe spaces for queer people is a lot more than just flying the Pride flag and saying you’re open and affirming,” the Very Rev. Christopher Montella, program group co-chair, reported to the April 11 online meeting of Diocesan Council. “There is real meaningful work the community needs to do to make spaces that are safe and affirming for queer people, especially those who have had church and God and the Bible weaponized against them.”
Last year, he said, “many of us found ourselves in the position of showing up at a slew of school board meetings, and we learned that people need training on how to show up at those. It could be potentially dangerous for someone who’s not quite prepared to just show up at one of these meetings and have to face an angry crowd, as happened a couple of times.”
Look for such training sessions in the fall, Montella told the council, adding it is critically important for church members to engage such issues within their local communities. The first LGBTQ+ ministry was convened in the diocese in 1992 as an educational and advocacy ministry under the leadership of the Rev. Mac Thigpen.

Resolutions on Israeli ‘apartheid’ top agenda of General Convention international policy committees
BY David Paulsen
The 81st General Convention is poised to consider 12 resolutions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, starting with four separate resolutions that would label Israel’s disparate treatment of Jewish and Arab citizens a kind of apartheid.
A hearing on those four resolutions is scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern April 18 on Zoom with the bishops’ and deputies’ committees on Social Justice & International Policy. Additional hearings are likely in the coming weeks as the parallel committees deliberate on whether to recommend the resolutions for approval by the House of Bishops and House of Deputies when they meet June 23-28 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Three of the apartheid resolutions were proposed originally for consideration by the 80th General Convention in 2022 but were deferred until this year’s meeting. A010, for example, would acknowledge that Israel “has passed laws that discriminate against its non-Jewish citizens, particularly Palestinians.” That resolution, along with A011 and A012, would put the church on record for the first time in labeling such a system as “apartheid.”
The fourth resolution, D003, was newly proposed this year by the Rev. Boyd Evans, a deputy from the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. It makes a similar case, “that Israel’s entrenched discriminatory rule over Palestinians amounts to the international wrong of apartheid.”
The Episcopal Church’s positions and policies toward the decades-long and ongoing conflict in the Holy Land typically generate some of the most contentious debates when bishops and deputies gather for the triennial churchwide meeting. This year’s General Convention comes as Israel faces intense global scrutiny for its handling of its war with Hamas.
