ADULT FORUM: HOW WE LEARN to BE BRAVE

Starting Wednesday, June 11, we will begin our study of How We Learn to Be Brave by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the famed Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C. This book is an inspirational guide to the key junctures in life that, if navigated with faith and discernment, pave the way for us to become our most courageous selves.

On January 21, 2025, many Americans were introduced to Bishop Mariann Budde thanks to what The New York Times called “an extraordinary act of public resistance.” During her prayer service for Donald J. Trump’s second inauguration, Bishop Budde addressed the president directly, imploring him “to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now,” from those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community to immigrants and refugees.

But for Bishop Budde, this moment was the culmination of a lifetime spent thinking about those pivot points when we’re called on to push past our fears and act with strength. With How We Learn to Be Brave, she teaches us that being brave is not a singular occurrence; it’s a journey that we can choose to undertake every day.

Here, Bishop Budde explores the full range of decisive moments, from the most visible and dramatic (the decision to go), to the internal and personal (the decision to stay), to brave choices made with an eye toward the future (the decision to start), those born of suffering (the decision to accept that which we did not choose), and those that come unexpectedly (the decision to step up to the plate). Drawing on examples ranging from Harry Potter to the Gospel According to Luke, she seamlessly weaves together personal experiences with stories from scripture, history, and pop culture to underscore both the universality of these moments and the particular call each one of us must heed when they arrive.

With Bishop Budde’s wisdom, readers will learn to live and to respond according to their true beliefs and in ways that align with their best selves. How We Learn to Be Brave will provide much-needed fortitude and insight to anyone searching for answers in uncertain times.

2025 ST. BEDE'S BACKPACK PROJECT

By Alice Short

St. Bede’s has partnered for several years with First AME Church on a back-to-school backpack project for children in foster care, and the start of summer means it’s happening again!

Our plan is to fill 45 backpacks (15 for elementary school-age children, 15 for middle school and 15 for high school), and we’re collecting money to purchase the supplies that will go inside.

If you’re writing a check, please make them payable to St. Bede’s with “Backpack Project” in the memo portion (at the lower left corner of the check.) You can bring the checks (or cash) to church, mail the checks to church, or send your checks to Alice Short (3156 Coolidge Ave. Los Angeles 90066).

We’d be grateful if you could make your donations by July 21.

As always, we will schedule an “assembly dinner” (probably in early August) to prepare the backpacks and enjoy the fellowship this project offers.

Questions? Please reach out to members of the Mission Committee. Thank you!

A PRAYER FROM THE BISHOP

PEACEFUL PROTEST AND PRAYER

On Tuesday evening, more than 1,000 people, including dozens of interfaith clergy and lay leaders, and Mayor Karen Bass gathered in downtown Los Angeles for a prayer vigil. The peaceful protest in response to recent ICE raids ended with Bishop John Taylor's prayer, in which he offered, “We can resist unjust authority without lifting a hand against our neighbor … And we beseech you to still the hand of anyone attempting to use violence against those who protest peacefully.” And protest peacefully we did.

As I looked out over a diverse crowd faithfully standing in solidarity with the immigrant community, I was inspired as I always am when I witness love in action–this love that brought us together, and then sent us out into the streets and to the Federal Building marching and singing “This Little Light of Mine,” armed with flowers and candles.

The clergy were moved forward onto the front steps, where many of us dropped to our knees. At the feet of members of the  California National Guard and LAPD officers—in riot gear and gas masks, armed with rifles, tear gas, and batons –– we prayed. We prayed for peace. We prayed for justice. We prayed for detainees and their families. We prayed for all in harm's way. We prayed for the young men and women deployed to this city, and we prayed for them to leave. We prayed for the country and its leaders. And then as the 8 p.m. curfew approached, we left as we had arrived –– peacefully.

Friends, our work of justice is ongoing. Among the 44 people arrested in the June 6 ICE raids were 14 church members from an Episcopal parish in Los Angeles. While we gather more details about their whereabouts and condition, Sacred Resistance, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is in desperate need of funds to ensure that we can secure rapid and adequate legal representation for all impacted. We ask that you make a donation as you are able to the Sacred Resistance Fund managed through St. Stephen's in Hollywood. You can donate via PayPal or Venmo @ststephenshollywood. Talk to Rev. Jennifer if you would like more information about immigration advocacy work and visit Sacred Resistance at lasacredresistance.org.

ELECTION PRAYER for NEW EDLA BISHOP

SUPPORT for IMMIGRANTS

Dear friends,

Many of you have shown concern about new immigration policies and how they will impact this vulnerable population among us here in Los Angeles. Below is information about how you can get involved through CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), an organization that St. Bede's works with and supports. Join us in preparation for this essential work.

Blessings,

Rev. Jennifer+

At the core of nearly every faith tradition lies the concept of a just, harmonious, and loving society where all souls are valued and everyone can thrive.

It is unconscionable that people fleeing violence in other countries would be deported back to those places, regardless of threats to their safety and security.

Because the Trump Administration is threatening immigrant communities across the country (regardless of documentation status), CLUE is working across Southern California to protect immigrant workers and their families in a variety of important ways.

You can join us in this work or support it with your donations knowing that you are doing your part to protect vulnerable people.

CLUE WELCOME NETWORK

CLUE is cultivating its vast network of houses of worship to create a network of congregations that provide respite, and even longer-term shelter, to migrants released into Southern California.

Over 30 congregations are already participating in the CLUE Welcome Network that houses asylum seekers and refugees. We receive referrals from CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights) for asylum seekers in need of shelter, from legal service providers that are seeking sponsors for people being released from detention, or direct walk-ins. Some congregations in the network provide temporary shelter or short-term housing, and others support those efforts with gifts of supplies, transportation, etc.

Thank you for standing in intimate solidarity as we seek to build a society where everyone is safe and lives with dignity.

If your congregation is interested in joining the network, offering housing or supplies or services, please contact Sithy Bin at sbin@cluejustice.org.

In faith and solidarity,

Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe's letter is titled “Acting Faithfully in Troubling Times."

Presiding bishop’s letter responds to Trump’s travel ban, immigration crackdown

By ENS Staff

[Episcopal News Service] Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe released a letter to The Episcopal Church on June 11 responding to a series of Trump administration policies on migration and immigration, including the use of the military for crowd control at protests.

After federal agents conducted immigration enforcement raids in Los Angeles on June 6, protesters clashed with law enforcement in parts of the city over the weekend. Trump, against the wishes of California leaders, ordered the California National Guard to deploy thousands of soldiers to assist.

His administration also has deployed Marines to the city to secure federal properties. California leaders have sued the Trump administration to reverse the decision to send in troops.

Rowe’s letter, titled “Acting Faithfully in Troubling Times,” calls such military deployments “a dangerous turn” in President Donald Trump’s attacks on his political opponents and his administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown. He also amplified a statement issued June 10 by the bishops of California’s six Episcopal dioceses.

Trump also has faced criticism for a separate policy, restricting travel to the United States from 19 countries. Rowe, in his letter, said he had written to Anglican leaders in those countries expressing his concern about Trump’s new travel ban.
