ALL SAINTS SUNDAY in REVIEW

All Saints Sunday started out with a beautiful service where, after some hymns and biblical readings, we, as parishioners, renewed our Baptismal Vows. This was followed by a Necrology where we honored our dearly departed loved ones, many of whose photos were on display in front of the altar. We were reminded that we carry on our lips the words of the prophets, in our veins the blood of martyrs, in our eyes the mystics’ visions, and in our hands the strength of thousands.

As is done monthly, parishioners, out of our abundance, brought gifts to be given to St. Joseph’s Center so that recipients will get some of their needs met and know that they do not walk alone. Reverend Jennifer blessed these gifts and thanked parishioners for their generosity.

In addition, Reverend Jennifer blessed our 2025 pledges to St. Bede’s. She characterized our pledges as “reflections of our gifts to mission and ministry, given to provide help, healing, and love to our neighbors.” She also blessed all parishioners for their prayerful and generous support of our church and asked God to watch over us as we faithfully steward these gifts for their best use in the world.

Later in the afternoon, the parish was blessed by a glorious, contemplative All Saints Sunday Evensong. Thank you to all who contributed to making our St. Bede’s All Saints Sunday something that gave God a reason to smile!

A DELIGHTFUL PARTY OF PARTIES

By Cynthia Rothschild

Although there weren’t as many fans Saturday night at the Sister of Bede’s Party of Parties as there were at Dodger Stadium, the crowd that gathered was ready for another great event. It was the annual fundraiser for neighborhood outreach and my chance to fill my calendar with unique and fun activities.

Laughter was heard all around as patrons posed for pictures accessorized with cutouts of Margarita glasses, hats and even a mustache. The Latin music was curated by Daphne Moote who, even though her plate is full, always asks for more to do.

The room was adorned with colorful tablecloths, votives and Mexican themed decor.

The Sisters of Bede know how to put on a spread. We enjoyed guacamole with chips and a layered bean dip (thanks Rea) to start, in addition to Margaritas. Carl’s wonderful home brewed beers also kept the group lively before dinner.

Reverend Jennifer lead us in a blessing. There was a celebrity sighting, too. Reverend Jennifer’s sister, Julie, was visiting from Connecticut. It was delightful to meet her and hear lots of stories about all the trouble . . . that’s for another time 😊.

We then dined on delicious tacos from Taco Soul, accompanied by homemade salads. The chef had prepared 3 different taco fillings including a vegan option that I can say was yummy and perfectly seasoned.

As dinner wound down, the hosts of the planned venues explained their events. The venues included a new Karaoke night at the church, planned for spring and sponsored by the free-formed Young Adult Group, and a new Game Night for all ages, planned for next fall. I saw a few people surreptitiously changing into running shoes, and the race was on to sign up for venues!

I think everyone got their first choices so there were a lot of happy faces. There might still be spaces in a few venues, and those who missed the party can still put their names on the wait list (see link below). The best thing is that we raised a record-breaking amount of over $5,400 for the Neighborhood Youth Association and other groups!

The finale was a decadent ice cream sundae bar with Mexican Chocolate provided by Kathy Russell. It disappeared quickly as we indulged in delight.

The Sisters of Bede are so grateful to everyone who attended and gave generously. A huge thank you goes out to all who were involved in making the night successful including Daphne, Rea, Kathy, Susan, Dee, Mary, Stephanie, Cynthia, Ina, Jerry and Karen, and Carl and Jennine.

Seeing all the dancing going on during clean-up, I think next year we need to make it a dance party!

Episcopal leaders respond to former President Donald Trump’s election to second term

By David Paulsen

The Episcopal Church’s two presiding officers and other church leaders are responding to President Donald Trump’s election to a second term by emphasizing Episcopalians’ baptismal commitment to being witnesses in the world to Jesus’ message of love for one another and respecting the dignity of every human being.

“Regardless of our political allegiances, we must remember that God has called us in The Episcopal Church to seek and serve Christ in all persons. No matter the party in power, we are one church, and we will continue to fulfill our baptismal covenant by proclaiming in word and example the Good News of God in Christ, striving for justice and peace among all people, and protecting the dignity of every human being.,” Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe said Nov. 6 in a pastoral letter to the church a day after the presidential election.

House of Deputies President Julia Ayala Harris also released a message acknowledging “the weight of what this moment represents” – both for herself as a Latina woman and for the church.”

“Today, our church is called to a distinct witness: to stand firm in our gospel commitments while remaining in communion with those who see the path forward differently,” Ayala Harris said. “In the days ahead, some in our church family will celebrate while others will experience deep fear and concern. Let us demonstrate to a watching world how Christians can model respectful dialogue and genuine fellowship even amid political difference. The bonds of affection in our church family run deeper than any ballot box could measure.”

A newsletter serving the Diocese of Los Angeles

The investiture of new Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe was held in the chapel of Christ the Savior at the Episcopal Church Center in New York. Katherine Feng of the Diocese of Los Angeles caught this screenshot on her monitor as she translated the service into Mandarin for in-person and online viewers.

In person and at watch parties, Diocese of LA people participate in Presiding Bishop Rowe’s investiture

The intimate but widely viewed investiture of the Most Rev. Sean Rowe as the 28th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church sent a message of hope and of “singing a new song” to God in a changing world and church, according to the Rev. Lester Mackenzie and others from the Diocese of Los Angeles who attended the Nov. 2 ceremony.

“For me, the whole point was holy joy,” said Mackenzie, who until recently served as rector of St. Mary’s Church in Laguna Beach. Rowe announced in a Nov. 4 letter Mackenzie’s appointment as chief of mission program for The Episcopal Church.

“The music was a journey around our whole Episcopal Church,” said Mackenzie, who offered prayers in Xhosa, and accompanied a quartet of singers with the djembe, an African drum. “There were some South African songs that are well-known and other songs from the rest of our Anglican communion, a mix that represented the diverse tapestry of our Episcopal Church.”

There were “also some old favorites, hymns you don’t need a hymnal to sing, the ones that are in your bones,” said Mackenzie, singing briefly, “’For All the Saints, who from their labors rest’ … you don’t need a hymnal for that!” He added, laughingly, that the ceremony also offered him “an excuse to pull out the drum.”

Presiding bishop names the Rev. Lester Mackenzie chief of mission program on churchwide staff

By EN Staff

Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe has named the Rev. Lester V. Mackenzie – rector of St. Mary’s, Laguna Beach; chaplain to the House of Deputies and Executive Council; and an associate of the Order of the Holy Cross – to serve The Episcopal Church as its chief of mission program.

“In this new role, he will support bishops and dioceses, diocesan networks, and church organizations by strategizing, coordinating, and building capacity for ministries of racial reconciliation, creation care, formation, and evangelism, and other key mission priorities,” Rowe wrote in a Nov. 4 announcement from the Episcopal Church Center in New York. “Lester will also use his gifts and experience at bridge building and reconciliation to support bishops and diocesan leaders in times of strategic change and conflict.”

Sharing news of the announcement, Los Angeles Bishop John Harvey Taylor expressed “congratulations and godspeed” to Mackenzie and his wife, Angela.

“I am truly blessed to walk this journey alongside our new Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe, and leaders from across our beloved church,” Mackenzie told The Episcopal News. “Together we are called to venture into new pathways, discovering fresh ways to collaborate and deepen our commitment to God’s mission.
