LLAIC LOVES ART
SCMA THEN/NOW/NEXT
A CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION AT THE
SMITH COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART
FRIDAY, APRIL 2 @ 1:15-2:30 (FULLY SUBSCRIBED)
NEW: REPEAT PROGRAM FRIDAY, APRIL 23 @ 1:15-2:30
|
|
Join Danielle Carrabino for an exclusive virtual tour of the exhibition that marks the centennial of the Smith College Museum of Art. "SCMA Then\Now\Next" tells the story of how the museum was "made" while also envisioning its future. It was installed during the museum's 100th anniversary in 2020, but due to the pandemic, it has not been open to the public. As one of the curators who helped organize this exhibition, Danielle will provide an overview of the exhibition along with some in-depth views of the works of art included.
Danielle grew up in Florence, Italy. She is Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the SCMA, where she oversees a collection ranging from antiquity to 1950. She has worked in museums including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Harvard Art Museums; and has taught art history in the U.S., England, and Italy. A specialist in Renaissance and Baroque art, she is currently completing a book based on her doctoral dissertation on Caravaggio and Sicily.
The April 23 program will be a repeat of the April 2 program. To request an invitation for the April 23 program, click here before noon on Wednesday, April 21. You'll receive your invitation by 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.

THE IMMORTALISTS
BY CHLOE BENJAMIN
FRIDAY, APRIL 9 @ 10:30-12:00
|
|
Sign up here before registration closes at noon on Thursday, April 8, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive an invitation by 3 p.m. that day. The meeting will open 15 minutes early so we can socialize before we begin the discussion. Contact Joan Chasan if you have trouble signing up.
It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes. A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

COME TO OUR LLAIC ZOOM HAPPY HOUR!
THURSDAY, APRIL 15

At our March Happy Hour. after catching up on each other's vaccinations, we talked about travel plans, the winning record of a member's horse, museums ranging from Crystal Bridges in Arkansas through the World War II museum to the Museum of Bad Art, surprise parties, and mothers who couldn't cook. Someone had to leave early to get news of a brand new great-grandchild.
We hope you'll join us again on Thursday, April 15, from 4 to 5 p.m. We should have lots of new things to talk about as well as the old ones. Bring your drinks, snacks, and conversation.

MOVIE MAVENS
FRIDAY, APRIL 16 @ 2:00-3:00
|
|
The Movie Mavens film choice for April is “Force Majeure,” a gripping tale of near disaster and an imploding marriage.
“Force Majeure” is described in the N.Y. Times as a “brilliant, viciously amusing takedown of bourgeois complacency, gender stereotypes and assumptions, and the illusion of security.” From the L.A. Times: "This filmmaker is in control at each and every moment, and does he ever know what he is doing." And from one more critic: “Force Majeure” is “a prickly moral comedy for grown-ups, full of sharply observed moments, spectacular scenery and masterfully manipulated atmosphere.”
One note of warning: Make sure you find the 2014 version of “Force Majeure” because apparently an inferior remake was done in 2020.
We will watch the film on our own, available on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, and free on Hoopla and Kanopy. We will gather on Zoom on Friday afternoon April 16 at 2:00 PM for a lively discussion.
Click here for an invitation by noon on Thursday, April 15, and you will receive the invite by 3:00 that afternoon.
