NOTES FROM THE BOARD

We are still entertaining the possibility of in-person classes on Tuesdays in the fall. In order to make the best possible decision at the latest possible date, we are postponing registration till Monday, August 8. If we do gather in person, we will require proof of full vaccination and masks. No exceptions.

We are looking forward to two virtual information sessions on June 21 and June 27. See the article where they’re described. Sign up and tell your friends!

We are excited about the recent activity of our Let’s Go committee, including successful trips to Portsmouth, NH, and Concord, MA. More trips are being planned. If you have any suggestions, contact chair Margalit Lai.

We are also actively scheduling programs for our Summersession beginning July 12.

Some of our affinity groups are taking July and August off, including the Movie Mavens, the Lit-Lovers, and the Spanish Group. But they will resume in September. Maybe one of these days we’ll actually attend a movie together!

Most exciting is the news that our fall course listings with full descriptions, dates, and details will appear this week on our website! So even though our registration date has been moved back, you can begin to plan your fall program now.

One final note: On July 1, membership registration for the 2022-2023 school year opens on the website: $80 for an annual membership (a bargain!) and $45 for a fall membership. If you are a newcomer creating an account, please remember that creating an account is not the same as becoming a member. It is only the first step. So, if you haven’t given us a credit card # for billing, you have not yet joined!

Happy Summer!

A PREVIEW OF OUR FALL COURSES

Click here to see a listing of the great classes you can choose this fall. The full course title appears here on the list of Courses and Course Leaders. On the schedule of courses attached below the titles are abbreviated to save space. By next week all the full course descriptions will be available on the website.

Click here for a tentative schedule of our fall courses. If there is no number following the course leader’s name, then the course is a 10-week class. The letter “a” designates courses that are the first five weeks of the semester and “b” courses are the second five weeks. The number indicates the number of weeks the course runs.

Tentatively we are planning to offer Tuesday classes in person at Temple Shir Tikva and Wednesday and Thursday classes on Zoom. We will make a final decision regarding these in-person courses before course registration opens on August 8, at which time we may find it necessary to switch these in-person classes to Zoom.

Click here for a full calendar of classes. If a course is 6a, it meets for the first five weeks plus the break week. Likewise, if a course is 6b, it meets for the second five weeks plus the makeup week.

SPANISH CONVERSATION GROUP

¡Bienvenidos a La Tertulia!

MONDAY, JUNE 20 @ 1:00-2:30

The LLAIC Spanish Conversation group, La Tertulia, meets via Zoom every other Monday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. We focus on print and short video articles from Spanish language media from around the world, choosing topics of general interest for every reading appetite. We take turns reading or viewing and then discuss the content, vocabulary, style, world view and other relevant themes.

Participants should feel comfortable reading, speaking, and understanding Spanish at an advanced intermediate level or higher. We address vocabulary and grammar issues as needed, but the focus is on conversation. No preparation is required. The hosts for the group are Miriam Grodberg and Larry Krakauer. Contact Miriam at mgrodberg@comcast.net with any questions.

LLAIC'S PICNIC IN THE PARK

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22 @ 12-2

You are cordially invited to attend a Picnic in the Park on Wednesday, June 22, at Cochituate State Park on Route 30 in Natick from noon until 2 p.m.  This is a wonderful way to reconnect with friends and colleagues you haven't seen in person for two and a half years.

Please bring your lunch and something to share (chips, dip, pretzels, fruit, cookies, brownies, etc.). The park has picnic tables and benches but feel free to bring your own seating as well. It is well shaded and on a beautiful lake with a sandy beach where you can go swimming if you like. Restrooms are also available.

Parking is plentiful and admission at the gate is $8 per vehicle (unless you have a state parking pass which admits you for free to all state parks). Set your GPS to 43 Commonwealth Avenue, Natick. Watch for the signs that will lead you to our group.

We hope to see you there!

Our sessions are always lively, and people get a chance to present all points of view. Newcomers are especially welcome.

THERE ARE NO GENIUSES ON WALL STREET

MONDAY, JULY 18 @ 10:30-12:00

LLAIC ZOOM HAPPY HOUR

THURSDAY, JULY 21

4:00-5:00

At our June Happy Hour we talked about the ongoing January 6 Committee hearings, the French parliamentary elections, reproductive rights, legal terminology, parental censorship of books in school libraries, teaching children to love reading and to analyze current events, books we'd recommend, and the upcoming picnic.

We hope you'll all join us on Thursday, July 21, from 4 to 5 p.m. Bring your drinks, snacks, and conversation. New members are especially welcome.

Click here to request a Zoom invitation before noon on Wednesday, July 20. You'll receive it that day.

On Friday, June 10, we had the last of our spring semester Lit-Lovers discussions, which was very stimulating. Now we will take a summer break. Lit-Lovers will resume meeting on the second Friday of the month in September. Late in July, we will post in the Quill the titles of the first three books which we will read for September, October and November.

Our calendar is nearly filled with Lit-Lovers participants who have volunteered to lead one discussion each. Don’t miss out on your chance to claim one of the months that is still left. Please contact Sandy Grasfield at sbgsbg@verizon.net.

FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUP

The French Conversation Group is reading Le Chateau de ma Mere by Marcel Pagnol.

We are a group of intermediate to advanced level speakers. We read books aloud, taking turns, and stopping often to discuss any interesting aspects of what we are reading. If you are interested in this group, please contact Betty Salzberg at bettysalzberg127@gmail.com.
