THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS TO TEACH
Teaching a course is a wonderful opportunity to share a topic that interests you with other like-minded people! Our courses have ranged from traditional topics such as history, math, science, and literature to current events to dogs and horses and clothing and food.
Think of something you’d like knowing more about, and share what you find!
The Curriculum Committee can help with developing your idea into a course—generally running from five to ten weeks. We hope that we will be able to have in-person classes but will continue to offer courses on Zoom, so you can select the format with which you’re comfortable. There’s full tech support for all virtual courses, with a dedicated person managing Zoom so the course leader can focus on teaching. There’s also training as needed on A/V equipment for in-person classes and on Zoom for virtual ones. And while course leaders teach on a volunteer basis, they may register early, tuition-free, for courses in the semester they are teaching or in the following semester. Our format consists of reading and discussing articles from various Spanish language media sources of general high interest. There is no homework although everyone is invited to submit articles they might find for our agendas.

This highly acclaimed family drama portrays the impact of a tragic death on a respected small-town Maine doctor, his wife, and their relationship. Based on a short story, Killings, by Andre Dubus, it explores the loving couples’ intimate relationship as they struggle to come together after being separated by an isolating grief. Expertly directed by Todd Field and acted by Tom Wilkinson, Marisa Tomei and Sissy Spacek, the film raises questions about how actions motivated by love can have unintended consequences.
After he worked as an actor for over a decade, In the Bedroom was Field’s writing/directing debut. “The film received five Academy Award nominations, three Golden Globe nominations, and Field was named both Screenwriter and Director of the year by the National Board of Review. Internationally acclaimed by critics, the film was named Best Picture of the Year by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, The New York Observer, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association” (IMBD). The film is available to rent on many of the major streaming services.
