VOLUNTEERING AT LLAIC -
"IT TAKES A VILLAGE"
As an independent collaborative, we all take part in keeping our organization alive and thriving. Our roles vary; some involve administrative skills, technical skills or writing skills. Others help with educational activities such as leading a class, running an affinity group or serving as door greeters. Some needs are ongoing, while others are occasional. If you can offer assistance of any kind, please let us know.
Here are some specific areas that can use volunteers. If your skills lean toward administration, consider Operations or Membership Committees, The Quill and the website. Finding topics for Special Programs or developing an Affinity Group are also needed. If you have skills in IT or Marketing, you might serve as a Zoom host, work on the website or help with advertising our LLAIC program. Leading a class for LLAIC gives you an opportunity to explore a topic of interest or a part of your professional life. We have people who can help you structure a class and help with the details. If you are willing to be a door greeter for an in-person class or event, we would appreciate that help as well.

Our format consists of reading and discussing articles from various Spanish language media sources of general high interest. There is no homework although everyone is invited to submit articles they might find for our agendas.

LLAIC LOVES ART PRESENTS
THE HYBRIDITY OF HISPANIC ART

HARVARD ART MUSEUMS
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22 @ 1:30 P.M.
Brandon Calderón, Harvard class of ’23, will explore how Hispanic art emerged from a mixture of violent Spanish colonization and the resistance of Indigenous traditions and testimony, through a close look at a few outstanding works on view at the Harvard Art Museums. Starting with Indigenous pottery from the Moche civilization of ancient Peru and ending with a 17th-century carved crucifix likely from the colonial Spanish Philippines, he will stress the agency of “New World artists” and how they worked within and against the Spanish Empire.

Brandon studies History of Art & Architecture and Romance Languages & Literatures at Harvard College. He has a special interest in Viceregal Mexican art and the topic of Decoloniality. Originally from Guadalajara, México, but living in Anaheim, California, Brandon also enjoys reggaeton music and cars.

All are welcome, especially any of you in the Newton, Brookline, Chestnut Hill, etc. area who haven't been active in LLAIC lately and would like to visit our new home and learn about our latest programs.

EDWARD M. KENNEDY INSTITUTE FOR THE UNITED STATES SENATE

Senate Chamber Replica
Please join us for a two-hour private tour at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Located on Columbia Point at 210 Morrissey Boulevard, it is on the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts next to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The Institute is designed to bring the history of the United State Senate alive. It features a full-scale replica of the U.S. Senate Chamber, interactive exhibits, and a reproduction of the late Senator Kennedy’s Washington, DC, office.
We will participate in an actual piece of legislation pending before the Senate and learn more about the issue from multiple perspectives, share our own ideas, and then cast our votes. For our “Today’s Vote” we have chosen The Electoral College. We will learn more about the history, function, and importance of the Electoral College and why there’s a movement to end and replace it.
We hope you will join us for breakfast/lunch at 11:00 AM at My Diner
(455 E. First) in South Boston, about a 10-minute drive to the institute. The restaurant is handicap accessible but parking is limited so we encourage you to carpool.
Parking for the Edward M. Kennedy Institute is free and is located across the street. The Institute is handicap accessible and wheelchairs are available for loan. Masks are recommended but not required at this time.

To reserve your place for the tour plus breakfast/lunch at My Diner (or tour only), please print and complete the attached registration form, enclose a check for the tour @ $10.00 senior or $12.00 adult per person and send to Ileen Conn at the address on the form. If you decide to join us for breakfast/lunch, we will order from the menu and receive individual checks.
Note: your check must be received by Friday, March 24. There is a limit of 25 participants.
We are looking forward to a stimulating and fun conversation while we eat. If you are unable to be with us at My Diner, please join us at the institute at 12:30 for the tour.
