BEYOND ARTWORKS: ARTIST STORIES OF OPPORTUNITY AND INSPIRATION

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 @ 1:30

A PRESENTATION AND CONVERSATION WITH PHOENIX ART MUSEUM DOCENT LIZ SMITH

Do you ever wonder how a piece of artwork came to be displayed in a museum? Join Docent Liz Smith as she unravels the hows and whys of some of Phoenix Art Museum’s most loved works of art. Travel back in history to the very first painting the Museum purchased and the story of how it all came about. Learn how circumstance and opportunity can be as critical to an artist as inspiration. You may never look at a piece of art in the same way without first wondering about its backstory.

Liz Smith is one of the newer Docents at the Phoenix Art Museum, having just completed her training in May of this year. She is excited to share with you what draws her to this volunteer “gig” - a fascination with the who, what, when, why, and how of art!

Click here before noon on Tuesday, September 19, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.

DINNER THEATER RETURNS TO LLAIC!!!

DIASPORA!

NEW REP THEATER, WATERTOWN

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14 @ 2:00 P.M.

(NEED TO REPLY BY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23)

Join us at the New Rep in Watertown on October 14 for the world premiere performance of Diaspora! by Phaedra Michelle Scott. From the New Rep website:

DIASPORA! follows Sunny, a writer tracing her lineage to find a long-lost grandparent. Aided by her niece, her best friend, and her best friend’s new boyfriend, she searches for answers in history. Time begins to cross over, and we find ourselves in Boston during the rise of the civil rights movement and a certain young minister making waves at the Twelfth Baptist Church and Boston University.

The performance is 95 minutes with no intermission.

Following the play we will gather for an early dinner at Branch Line restaurant adjacent to the theater. Order from the menu and receive separate checks.

Parking is plentiful in a lot across from the theater.

Please fill out the attached registration form and send your $35 check to Terri Kasper by Saturday, September 23. Seating is limited and the theater will hold our tickets for only one week, so please let us know as soon as possible if you will be joining us.

BOSTON FREEDOM TRAIL

WALKING TOUR

MONDAY, OCTOBER 2 @ 10:00 A.M.

LUNCH AT OLD UNION OYSTER HOUSE

Please join us for a leisurely two-hour private walking tour of the Boston Freedom Trail with LLAIC's own Roseli Weiss as our guide. She will be dressed in costume as Sarah Bradley Fulton, mother of the Boston Tea Party and spy for George Washington. Among other historical stories she will tell us the surprising details of how 342 pounds of tea ended up in Boston Harbor.

We will meet behind the Visitor Center at 139 Tremont Street on the Boston Common at 10:00 a.m. and walk to the State House, the Granary Burial Ground and the King’s Chapel Burial Ground, ending at Quincy Market. There will be opportunities to stop and rest along the way. Although the trip is handicap accessible in most areas, one needs to be vigilant on the sidewalks and streets of Boston.

We hope you will join us for lunch at 12:15 p.m. at the nearby award-winning Union Oyster House, a National Historic Landmark established in 1826. We will order from the menu and can request individual checks.

Transportation: We recommend that you carpool or use public transportation. Both the Google and Moovit apps are very helpful. All Red and Green Line trains stop at Park Street on the Common. The Old Union Oyster House is a two-minute walk to the Haymarket stop on the Orange and Green Lines. Parking is available at the Boston Common Garage.

MOVIE MAVENS

TOKYO STORY

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 @ 2:00

The movie we will discuss on Friday, September 22, is Tokyo Story by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. Many of us have probably never heard of this movie, or of Ozu, but the film and director are highly regarded. Once every 10 years the British film magazine Sight and Sound conducts a poll of film critics, and a separate poll of directors. The critic Roger Ebert described their polls of the greatest films ever made as "by far the most respected of the countless polls of great movies--the only one most serious movie people take seriously." In 2012 the Sight and Sound poll of 358 directors worldwide voted Tokyo Story the greatest film of all time, and the critics voted it the third best.

The movie is available for free at Kanopy (the library app), free with subscription on Max (formerly HBO Max), $3.99 at Apple TV, and on DVD in libraries. It is well-worth watching!

Click here before noon on Thursday, September 21, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day. Newcomers are welcome.

The hosts for the group are Miriam Grodberg and Larry Krakauer. Contact Miriam at mgrodberg@comcast.net with any questions.

LLAIC LIT-LOVERS

A FAREWELL TO ARMS

BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY

DISCUSSION LED BY JOE MORE

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13 @ 10:30

Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield, this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep.

Click here to request a Zoom invitation before noon on Thursday, October 12. The meeting will open 15 minutes early so we can socialize before we begin the discussion. Contact Joan Chasan if you have trouble signing up. All book lovers are welcome.

Future selections will be:

  • November 10: Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu (led by Barbara Barry)
  • December 8: The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafaf (led by Yvonne Sacks)
