PARKING AT TEMPLE SHALOM

Has become challenging! The temple’s pre-school parents are often picking up their children at the same time that some of us are coming to class or LUNCH@LLAIC.

So here’s our suggestion: If you are into exercise and walking and love fresh air, try parking on one of the streets around the temple so we can leave room in the parking lot for our members who are not so into walking! Click here for a diagram of the temple parking lot and the surrounding streets, most of which have lots of free parking available.

THERE ARE STILL MORE CLASSES TO COME!

If you haven’t registered for a fall class, or if you are loving your class and want to take another, visit the list of courses on the website. LLAIC has several five- and six-week courses beginning at the end of October:

  • The LILAC Players: A Play-Reading Group (no charge)

Do any of these sound interesting? Maybe you know little or nothing about some of them and would like to know more? It’s not too late to register for one of these classes and join the fun!

SESSIONS OF THE FALL SEMESTER!

BIOETHICS: THE DILEMMAS OF MODERN MEDICINE

(VIDEO AND DISCUSSION)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1 @ 1:00-3:00

In this engaging lecture, Professor Jeffrey Kahn of Johns Hopkins University will examine the state of health care and biomedical research in the U.S. and around the globe, through the lens of ethics. His presentation will facilitate interesting discussions on a range of controversial bioethics issues. Topics will include current medical ethical issues including the practices of research involving patients as well as healthy subjects, the debates about the beginning and end of life, reproductive technologies, transplantation, and the latest cutting-edge research in genetics and genomics.

Jeffrey Kahn is the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, and Professor of Bioethics and Public Policy. Professor Kahn currently chairs the Board on Health Sciences Policy, and he speaks and writes widely for public audiences on the controversial bioethics issues of our day. Shelly Levine, along with Dr. Eric Sawitz, will facilitate a provocative discussion about these challenging issues. We are hoping that some LLAIC scientists and physicians will join the discussion!

PASTRAMI ON RYE: THE HISTORY OF JEWISH DELIS

(VIDEO AND DISCUSSION)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 @ 1:00-3:00

For much of the 20th century, the New York Jewish deli was an iconic institution in both Jewish and American life–a kind of homeland for the soul…with pickles on the side! Along with the synagogue, it was the primary gathering place for the Jewish community, and it even inspired Asians to open their ethnic restaurants. Because of changes in our society including more diversity of cuisine, delis have lost their popularity during the past several decades. Today, the deli is experiencing a nostalgic resurgence as well as being featured in plays, films, TV shows, songs, and stand-up routines. Don’t we all remember that famous line “I’ll have what she's having.” in “When Harry Met Sally”? Eric Sawitz will whet your appetite with a savory discussion about the history of delis!

No need to RSVP, but contact Jennifer Young before 11 a.m. that day if you'd like to order pizza at $3 for one slice or $5 for two. Or bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea and designer water will be provided. Parking may be challenging, but plenty of on-street parking is available. If you have a lanyard and name tag, please wear them so that temple security will know who you are.

RED MEADOW FARM CRANBERRY BOG TOUR, CARVER

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 @ 10:30

LUNCH AT ADRIA, EAST BRIDGEWATER

Please join us on a 45-minute walking tour of Red Meadow Farm’s cranberry bog operation. A knowledgeable guide will take us through the cranberry growing and harvest process, explaining each step along the way. You will have an opportunity to observe cranberry bogs, meet farm animals including sheep, and marvel at the flooded berries.

We will meet at the farm, 213 Meadow Street, Carver, and there will be directions as to where you can park your car near the trees. Do not park at the farm stand. At 10:15, we will meet  near the owner’s house. The house is visible behind and to the right of the bog. There will be someone to guide you. The walking path around the bog is a flat dirt road. There is limited paved parking near the house if you have difficulty walking a long distance on the road.

After the tour we will have about a 15-minute drive on a beautiful country road to the Adria restaurant, 436 Oak Street (Route 14), East Bridgewater. The Adria restaurant is ADA accessible with a large parking lot. It has Mediterranean-style food with vegetarian options. It has a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor.

To register, fill out the attached registration form and a check for $20.00 per person and mail it to Yvonne Sacks at the address on the form. If you prefer, you can Venmo the $20.00 fee and email the registration form to Yvonne. (If you can't edit it online, download it first, fill it out and scan it or take a pic with your phone. Email it as you would any other pic.) Call Yvonne first to make sure that there is still space available.

There will be no refunds once we purchase your ticket, except in the case of heavy rain. In that case, the trip will be cancelled and your money will be refunded. In case of light rain the tour will take place.

About a week before the trip you will receive a final email with directions and carpool information. Please try to carpool if possible.

We look forward to sharing this unique adventure with you!

Please refer to the registration form if you have additional questions.

The Presentation on October 9th, entitled “Early America”  includes Art created by residents of New England and New Spain and tells the story of a growing sense of nationhood and identity.  Explore the historical context and peoples involved in the creation of our nation, territorial expansion and displacement, and economic development through artworks from colonial to Jacksonian America.

Leading the discussion-based program (no lecture here, so come ready to participate!) will be Eileen Doughty, a longtime docent and recent online presenter with SAAM.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS (Das Leben der Anderen)

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 @ 2:00-3:00

(NOTE DATE CHANGE)

The Lives of Others is a 2006 German film written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The plot focuses on the monitoring of East Berlin residents by agents of the Stasi, East Germany's secret police. The film won many awards which will be highlighted during the review and grossed $77 million dollars, made for only $2 million.

Released 17 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, marking the end of the German Democratic Republic, it was the first notable drama film about Stasi spying on its people. It was widely applauded in Germany, and the film was complimented for its accurate tone.

The plot mainly consists of a Stasi agent spying on a liberal playwright and his girlfriend that turns an unexpected twist for all concerned.

A gripping tale that will not be easily forgotten as you experience what it is like to live on the “other” side.

This film is available streaming on Watch TCM or to rent on YouTube, Apple TV, Amazon, or Fandango At Home. Please refer to the “JustWatch” app for more information. Click here before noon on Thursday, October 24, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.
