COURSE LEADERS NEEDED FOR SPRING!
Although it hasn’t really felt like fall, with lots of nice warm days, LLAIC is beginning to think about the spring and courses for next semester. Teaching a course is a wonderful opportunity to share a topic that interests you with other like-minded people! Courses can range from more traditional topics such as history, math, science, and literature to current events to classes looking at music and film. The Curriculum Committee can help with developing your idea into a course—generally running from five to ten weeks.
We will continue offering classes in person at Temple Shalom in Newton. It’s a lovely facility, with plenty of space for our schmooze room—just waiting to be the location for special programs and before- or after-class lunches. We understand that there are reasons why both course leaders and members might prefer to teach or take classes on Zoom, but nothing can compare to the warmth of in-person class discussions and the opportunity to reconnect with our fellow LLAIC members. The social aspect of LLAIC has always been one of our biggest features, and we’d love to see it back! So if it’s possible, please do consider offering a course in person—but if that doesn’t work for you, Zoom will continue as an alternative. There’s full tech support for all virtual courses, with a dedicated person managing Zoom so the course leader can focus on teaching. There’s also training as needed on A/V equipment for in-person classes and on Zoom for virtual ones.
While course leaders teach on a volunteer basis, they receive a free annual membership and may register early, tuition-free, for up to two courses in the semester they are teaching or in the following semester. So think about what you’d like to explore, and send in a course proposal form! And if you know anyone who might be interested in teaching, let them know about us!

LLAIC LIT-LOVERS
SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE
BY KURT VONNEGUT
LED BY PAT COLE
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13 @ 10:30
| |
Slaughterhouse-Five is the now-famous parable of Billy Pilgrim, a World War II veteran and POW who has, in the later stage of his life, become "unstuck in time" and who experiences at will (or unwillingly) all known events of his chronology out of order and sometimes simultaneously. Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness.
Click here before noon on Thursday, December 12, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day. If you can, log on a quarter of an hour earlier to socialize.
Coming up:
-
January 10: Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, led by Sandy Grasfield

MOVIE MAVENS

Watch this space for the name of the film we'll watch this month on our own, then gather on Zoom for our usual exhilarating discussion. After it's announced, click here before noon on Thursday, December 19 to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day. | |

We are reading "Veiller Sur Elle" by Jean-Baptiste Andrea, a saga of the tumultuous life of a sculptor set against the backdrop of the rise of fascism in Italy. The book won the Prix Goncourt in 2023.
We are a group of intermediate to advanced level speakers. We read books aloud over Zoom, taking turns, and stopping often to discuss any interesting aspects of what we are reading. If you are interested in this group, please contact Betty Salzberg at bsalzberg127@gmail.com.
