PLEASE JOIN LLAIC LOVES ART AND THE
SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM
ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2024 @
1:30-2:30
On December 11th, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will present part four of the series entitled Beyond the Frame: American History through Artworks - Contemporary Life. Even if you’ve missed the three previous sessions, you’ll still enjoy and be able to actively participate in this final program, which will be led by Joele Michaud. Americans entering the postwar era experienced a boom time clouded by global uncertainty. Artists grappled with how to reflect America’s changing social and political landscape. Analyze and interpret works made in response to various movements, and ponder together works that ask us: “What does it mean to be an American today?”
Our docent, Joele Michaud, is a retired art educator and amateur artist with a Masters in Art Education degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She now serves as a gallery docent and video presenter to remote classrooms and audiences for three Smithsonian museums: the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Renwick Gallery, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Her special interests lie in African American art and history, along with other African-influenced cultures.

LLAIC LIT-LOVERS
SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE
BY KURT VONNEGUT
LED BY PAT COLE
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13 @ 10:30
| |
Slaughterhouse-Five is the now-famous parable of Billy Pilgrim, a World War II veteran and POW who has, in the later stage of his life, become "unstuck in time" and who experiences at will (or unwillingly) all known events of his chronology out of order and sometimes simultaneously. Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness.
Click here before noon on Thursday, December 12, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day. If you can, log on a quarter of an hour earlier to socialize.
Coming up:
-
January 10: Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, led by Sandy Grasfield

MOVIE MAVENS
AMERICAN FICTION
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20 @ 2:00-3:00
| |
|
The Movie Mavens choice for the Dec. 20th session is American Fiction, a 2023 film that was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
A few comments from the critics:
- “[T]he epitome of how powerfully comedy and drama can be blended”
- “A finely honed skewering aimed at the nonsense of identity politics”
And finally:
- “A biting satire of just about every aspect of American life, especially academia, publishing, and racism and a heartfelt story about family connections...It is provocative, funny, and searingly smart. In my opinion, it is the best film of the year”
So, even if you watched this film a couple years ago, it is worth watching again. So much to discuss! The film is available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango, and Roku.
Click here before noon on Thursday, December 19 to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.
